Clover is the main protagonist and player character of Undertale Yellow. They are the seventh human to fall into the Underground (including Undertale's first human), and the sixth SOUL that is collected by Asgore Dreemurr in the Pacifist endings.[1] Throughout the game, they venture in the Underground through old and new locations to reach the Surface.

Unlike Frisk, Clover does not seem to have a bond with the first human. Due to this, the game automatically uses Clover as the protagonist's name instead of prompting them to name the fallen child.

Profile[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Clover is an androgynous human child. They wear a leather jacket, a pair of cuffed blue jeans, a yellow bandana with a blue dot pattern, a pair of brown shoes, and a brown cowboy hat. They have short brown hair with a tuft in the back, sometimes drawn as a ponytail, as well as pale skin and a neutral expression. During the Genocide Route, their eyes are hidden by a shadow over it. In their overworld sprite, Clover appears to be taller than Frisk. Some old official art depicts them with yellow irises.

Background[edit | edit source]

Clover's background is left vague. The most explicit detail is that their main reason for jumping into the Underground was to seek justice for the five humans preceding them. While never explicitly stated, it is implied that Clover may have come from an abusive or neglectful home. This may have resulted in them becoming independent at a young age.

Because Flowey wants them to fight Asgore for him, he has been repeatedly resetting and manipulating Clover for some time before the game takes place. After falling into the Underground, Clover originally chose to stay in the Ruins with Toriel. Flowey eventually provoked them into leaving the Ruins, but following the path laid out in Undertale led to Clover repeatedly dying, unable to make it to New Home. Eventually, Flowey decided to tamper with the switch puzzle at each reset to set them off course and use his SAVE to allow Clover to pass through the Underground more easily.

Personality[edit | edit source]

While Clover is largely a silent protagonist, elements of their personality are shown or implied at several points. Generally, Clover has a strong sense of justice and a drive to do what they perceive to be the right thing, with some variations depending on the route.

Main Story[edit | edit source]

Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

Clover falls into the Ruins and meets Toriel. She briefly guides them, but when they pull the second lever in the lever puzzle, they fall into the Dark Ruins. Clover loses the Missing Poster in the fall. In the next room, they meet Flowey, who introduces them to the mechanics of dodging and saving.

From there, they traverse the Ruins with Flowey in a peaceful manner, sparing every monster along the way and solving the puzzles. Eventually, they battle Dalv at the end of the Dark Ruins. While Dalv initially mistakes them for another human due to their resemblance, he realizes that Clover isn't there to harm him and Clover becomes friends with him, which motivates him to leave the Dark Ruins. Dalv escorts Clover to the exit of the Dark Ruins.

After leaving the Dark Ruins, Clover ends up in Snowdin. They run into Martlet fixing a puzzle, but she does not see them. Clover explores Snowdin, meeting a variety of monsters and finding the Honeydew Resort, but Clover soon encounters Martlet once again at her lookout station. She realizes they are a human, which results in a battle. Clover can either refuse to attack her or alternate attacking and sparing her. Either way, she will end the battle and offer to guide them back to the surface. Together, they board the UG Aviator and ride through Waterfall. Unfortunately, instead of docking, the boat speeds up and crashes into the Dunes. As a result, Clover becomes separated from Martlet, which Flowey expresses relief about.

Clover traverses through its dangers of the Dunes for some time, exploring the East Mines, meeting El Bailador, and sparing monsters. After a while, Martlet catches up with them once more. She follows them along, but this is short-lived. As soon as they enter the Wild East, Starlo is captivated by seeing a real human. Clover is taken by the Feisty Five to be trained to join their crew and Martlet is put into jail to keep her out of the way.

During Clover's training, they get the Nice Hat, as well as the Wild Revolver after Starlo buys it for them from Blackjack. Starlo prioritizes Clover over the feelings of his posse during this time. After promoting Clover to deputy, the Feisty Four battle Clover and tell Starlo off. Starlo blames Clover for their argument and fights them. They refuse to fight him, instead waiting it out until Ceroba arrives to talk him down.

Afterwards, Martlet approaches Clover, now free, and informs them of her departure to Snowdin. After she exits, Clover comes to the Steamworks gate where Ceroba and Starlo wait. Ceroba explains her daughter Kanako's disappearance to Clover. She tells them Kanako is in a lab in Hotland, and she is going to seek her out. She asks Clover to accompany her while Starlo stays back to watch the town.

Now teamed up, Clover and Ceroba traverse the Steamworks. After turning on the power, they meet Axis, who was created by Chujin Ketsukane, Ceroba's husband. As he perceives the duo as breaking in, they are forced to avoid him on multiple occasions. They solve various puzzles and encounter many robots while learning about Ceroba and her family's past. At the exit, Axis manages to corner Clover, resulting in a conflict where Ceroba is locked out of the room.

Clover slowly drains Axis's battery while Ceroba tries to break in to the room. After she succeeds, Clover drains almost all of Axis's battery and he calms down. Ceroba presents the machine Clover made at the beginning of the Steamworks. Axis immediately falls in love. Before Axis takes the machine away, he whitelists Ceroba and Clover to prevent him from attacking them again.

After beating Axis, Clover and Ceroba make their way to the elevator at the end of Steamworks. However, Starlo interrupts to confront Ceroba about items he found within her house and Clover is taken back to the Wild East by Ed. There, Clover reunites with Martlet and the Feisty Four reveal to Clover that Ceroba had ulterior motives the whole time. Martlet and Clover go off to investigate her home. There they find a secret room underneath her kotatsu containing tapes made by Chujin, who had been working to create a special serum extracted from a monster injected with a human SOUL extract in order to make monsters stronger and protect against humans.

After finding Ceroba's secret, Martlet goes to New Home and Clover has time to visit past locations. When they are done, they meet back up with Martlet on the UG Apartments rooftop and head into New Home to search for Ceroba. They find Starlo in the middle of an argument with her. The situation quickly escalates and Starlo tells Martlet to escape with Clover. Ceroba reacts quickly and attacks Martlet and Starlo, monologuing briefly before initiating a fight with Clover. Clover gains the ability to shoot and dash in her fight. After doing enough damage with their SOUL, they can see her memories highlighting secrets from her past.

After defeating Ceroba, Clover has a choice of either sparing her or killing her. If Clover chooses to spare Ceroba, both Starlo and Martlet wake up and try to plan for the future with Ceroba. They start to argue as they cannot figure out a way for Clover to live safely. Slowly, Clover realizes both that they are unable to leave the Underground and that monsterkind deserves to be free. They insist on giving up their SOUL, despite the protests of their friends. They hand Martlet their hat and Starlo their gun, and the two leave, unable to watch, before Clover takes out their SOUL and gives it to Ceroba.

Ceroba asks if she should stay, but they tell her to leave. Flowey expresses disappointment at their choice to give up their SOUL, but says farewell one last time as they pass away.

If Clover chooses to kill Ceroba, Starlo expresses fury at them while Martlet defends their choice. He leaves, and she takes Clover to Asgore. Once facing Asgore, Clover asks for Martlet to leave, which she reluctantly does, and Asgore takes Clover to the Barrier. When he reveals the five souls, Clover trembles and aims their gun at him. Asgore initiates battle, starting an attack that does not end, and Clover's SOUL is eventually captured.

Neutral Route[edit | edit source]

Much of the beginning of the Neutral Route plays out the same as the Pacifist Route. The route majorly diverges in the Steamworks. Instead of Ceroba helping Clover, she stays in the Wild East. In places where they need help, Flowey helps out instead. Because they do not have access to Chujin's passcodes, they take an alternate path instead of the Factory to reach the exit.

Before the Axis fight, Clover will provide them with Friendliness Pellets and remind them how much their friendship means to him. He will also discreetly return the Missing Poster, though this will likely go unnoticed until Clover checks their mail in Hotland. At the end of the Axis fight, if they choose to spare him, they can do so by complimenting him, which will result in him whitelisting them, wishing them well, and leaving to recharge. Past this point, Clover will receive some mail. This includes a letter from Martlet before entering Hotland, telling them to meet her on the roof of UG Apartments, and a letter from Ceroba after entering Hotland, warning them of the impossibility of defeating Asgore.

Though Flowey pressures Clover to go to New Home, they instead meet up with Martlet. She will comment on their actions so far, being more critical the higher their LV is. Regardless, she expresses remorse for what they had to go through and will ask Clover to move in with her and live a peaceful childhood. Clover will not turn this offer down, but before the two can leave to return to Snowdin, Flowey will kill her in front of them. Clover is distressed by this but cannot do anything to stop him as Flowey takes their SOUL. This is where he reveals that he has been resetting to try to force Clover to fight the king. He will then struggle to make Clover submit, but they do not give in. After a while of toying with them, he grows bored and resets.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

During the Genocide Route, Clover's desire to uphold justice manifests in the form of a desire for vengeance for the deaths of the five humans, particularly against Asgore. Clover primarily becomes a lot more serious and impatient, as is especially demonstrated by how they forego their usual comedic narration for statements that are more factual and direct.

Though Clover is much more aggressive, their violent behavior starts out as only directed to those that they consider to be 'enemies,' being monsters who attack them or otherwise hinder their progress. As such, they are willing to let people go provided they surrender or are not an obstacle. However, this quality slowly diminishes over the course of the route.

The route starts the same as the other two. However, instead of sparing all of the enemies encountered, Clover instead seeks out and kills them all. After killing Dalv and the other monsters residing in the Dark Ruins, Clover enters Snowdin, where most of the residents have already evacuated. Here, Flowey explains how, since the Dark Ruins is an isolated area, Clover can pretend like nothing happened. Despite this, Clover continues to kill everyone they encounter. Martlet meets them shortly before the river and cannot initially tell they are human. When she realizes, she tries to make a stand but flees once Clover does enough damage. Clover rides the UG Aviator downstream, which once again crashes into the Dunes, where the slaughter continues. Before reaching the Wild East, Martlet confronts Clover and tries to empathize with them. Clover ignores her pleas and threatens her at gunpoint, causing her to retreat once more.

Clover enters the Wild East, encountering Starlo, who challenges them to a duel. Starlo, no matter if he wins or loses, gets shot down by Clover. Ceroba, after escorting the other monsters out of the Wild East, comes back check on Starlo, only to find him on his deathbed. After he turns to dust, Ceroba attacks Clover. Ceroba still eventually falls to Clover and they continue their journey to the Steamworks.

By this point, they are much more outwardly aggressive. Instead of solving puzzles, Clover attempts to shoot any barrier in their way. This usually fails. When Axis tries to start a battle, they cut him off by shooting him in the overworld. They are unable to finish the job, as he flees. Clover pursues him throughout the Steamworks, killing every robot in their way despite the fact that they do not grant EXP. They eventually corner him at the exit and begin a battle.

It is during this encounter with Axis that Clover's complete desire for vengeance, hate, and rage are put on display, as seen when their LOVE increases significantly after Axis regretfully reveals how he had to neutralize the previous human before Clover fires a beam with their SOUL and destroys him.

Flowey comes out to examine the aftermath of the battle. At this point, Clover outright ignores Flowey and quickly moves along to Hotland. Flowey tries to steer them back on track to New Home, but they are quick to dismiss it.

Their rage continues on into their battle with Martlet, who states that she has been taught all her life that humans are dangerous yet she chose to try to see the good in them, which proved all for naught in the end. After Martlet injects herself with a serum (implied to contain either determination or some of the leftover Blue SOUL extract from Chujin), a battle between her and Clover ensues. However, in the end, Clover defeats Martlet; additionally, the aftereffects of the serum cause Martlet to melt and turn to dust.

Flowey then appears and reprimands Clover for their actions, telling them that the Castle will now be on full lockdown. In the heat of the moment, Flowey demands for them to destroy the Castle walls and to get him "his souls," which ultimately confirms Flowey's true objective: to absorb all six Souls and become God. This slip of the tongue is the last straw to break Clover's back. With all their determination at their disposal, Clover is now able to override Flowey's control over the SAVE file and load whenever he tries to attack them. He tries to escape, but to no avail. Now helpless, Flowey finally snaps and laughs maniacally, ranting at Clover about how much he hates them. In a fit of rage, Clover kills Flowey; rather than firing their laser, they kill him slowly with eight shots from their revolver.

With Flowey, Martlet, and all the monsters they crossed dead, Clover's final objective is to kill the king and avenge the other five humans who had their SOULs stolen. Clover makes their way through the capital and into the king's castle to find Asgore somberly staring out the window from his main garden. He looks Clover's way and explains how he wishes that he and them could handle matters more peacefully. Asgore finally finishes by saying that Clover's fate has been sealed ever since they've entered his kingdom and launches his trident at them, only for Clover to block it effortlessly. They charge up and fire a powerful beam that incinerates Asgore and his garden and turns him to dust. After Asgore's death, Clover absorbs his SOUL frees the other five Human Souls. At this point, to Clover, justice has been served. They leave the Underground for good with the five Human Souls.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Unlike Frisk, Clover (for the majority of the game) does not have the highest amount of Determination in the Underground, so Flowey saves the game on their behalf.

Their starting equipment is composed of the Toy Gun and the Worn Hat, which provide no changes to AT or DF and cannot be manually changed. Instead, they can be equipped with different kinds of ammunition or accessories respectively. In Undertale, the yellow SOUL's items are the Cowboy Hat and the Empty Gun, which is the reason for this. Clover is also able to run if the X key is held, similarly to Deltarune's Kris.

As manifested in the final bosses in each route, Clover gains the ability to dash through attacks. Clover also has the power to fire attacks of their own during the enemy turn (as seen in 'yellow SOUL modes' during Undertale and Deltarune.) It is similar to mechanics found in Deltarune, with both smaller bullets along with larger, more powerful charged attacks. Their SOUL bullets are most powerful in the Genocide Route, as their charged shots become a massive laser able to kill Asgore, destroy the throne behind him, and leave a massive hole in the wall of the throne room, all in one shot.

Also seen in the Pacifist and Genocide fights, Clover has the ability to reach out and access monsters' memories. They use this against Ceroba in Pacifist each time they damage part of her mask, accessing her 'darkest memories' and learning the truth behind her motivation for obtaining their SOUL. In the Genocide route, they use this ability against Martlet, scanning her memories for a reason to hate her and presumably also a justified reason to kill her. While this does not exactly appear in Neutral, Clover invades Flowey’s subconscious after the first phase and sees his uncountable amount of deaths, rendering a similar effect.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The name Clover has an association with good luck via the four-leaf clover. They are named after the yellow SOUL attack during the Photoshop_Flowey fight in Undertale, where the SOUL will heal the protagonist by shooting four-leafed green plants.
  • Clover has gone through a total of four sprite changes.
Comparison of Clover's third and fourth sprites.
  • Unlike how Flowey treats Frisk in Undertale, Flowey is nice to Clover and even saves the game for them. This is because Flowey has manipulated the events of the game to take place, and for his ultimate plan of obtaining the human SOULs, he needs Clover to defeat Asgore.
  • Prior to Undertale Yellow's full release, it was unknown where Clover died, as Catty simply says she "found a gun in a dumpster", which could mean that that they either died somewhere in Waterfall, or their belongings were disposed of following their death. In Undertale Yellow, it is shown that Clover sacrifices themself by allowing Ceroba to use their SOUL after sparing her in the Pacifist Ending. Later on in the credits, Martlet, Starlo, Dalv, and Ceroba put Clover's belongings they gave to the former four in a smaller version of the aviator and let it set sail. The items land in the Waterfall dumpster, where Bratty and Catty would find them between the events of Undertale Yellow and Undertale.
  • Clover's favorite color of pants is neon green.[4]
  • Clover can reach a max HP of 100, unlike Frisk, who reaches a maximum of 99 HP.
  • Clover may be left-handed, supported by a few things throughout the game:
    • In the old intro, they hold the Missing Poster in their left hand.
    • When they pull their gun in the overworld, they hold it in their left hand.
    • While crawling to the wall in the Pacifist ending, they pull themself forward using their left arm.
  • Clover uses they/them pronouns throughout the game, but the specifics of their gender are stated to be open for interpretation.[5]
  • Cramped living conditions bring back unpleasant memories, implying they were either bullied or abused.[6]
  • Interacting with plates in Ceroba's house reminds Clover of their duties back home, suggesting they were tasked with either washing the dishes or cooking.[7]
    • This same interaction also contains dialogue stating that they've already moved on from their family at home.[8]
    • The Sousborg enemy also compliments Clover's talent in cooking, suggesting the latter.[9]
  • Flavor text from the alley behind UG Apartments reveal that:
    • They’re a cat person.
    • They prefer cinnamon over butterscotch.
  • March 17, also known as Saint Patrick's Day, is called the Clover Day by the developers.[10][11]
