Snowdin

Snowdin is a location in Undertale Yellow that returns from Undertale. Like in Undertale, it is a large forest covered in snow, located right after the Ruins. In Undertale Yellow, Clover enters a lower part of Snowdin from the Dark Ruins, and traverses a completely different path than one taken in Undertale. It was first revealed in February 2018, in a trailer that first premiered at Atlantale 2018.

Main Story[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

As found out through Chujin's tapes, before the events of Undertale Yellow, an incident which Chujin refers to as the Snowdin attack with the Integrity human attacking a monster had taken place in Snowdin.[1][2] Chujin's daughter, Kanako, had been playing with that monster, which lead Chujin to worry about what could have happened if the human attacked Kanako.[3]

Pillars in Dark Ruins depicting events of the attack.

It is hinted throughout the game that the Snowdin resident that the human attacked was Dalv:

  • On different Fun Values, the pillars in the Pillar Room of Dark Ruins show four different drawings: a hooded figure looking like Dalv, a robot looking like Axis, what appears to be a human whose head was blasted off, and a SOUL.
  • In Kanako's room at the Ketsukane Mansion, a drawing of Dalv can be seen.
  • Dalv mentions how someone used to place corn on his doorstep daily,[4] and Ceroba mentions how Starlo's family used to give Chujin baskets full of corn.[5]

This event is what likely lead to Dalv to close himself off in the Dark Ruins.

Neutral Route[edit | edit source]

After exiting the Dark Ruins, Clover meets Flowey under a giant rock with a Delta Rune carved on it. In the room to the east, they find the first instance of a Dimensional Box in the game, with a sign from a box hater to the right.

Clover meets Martlet several times throughout Snowdin, but she only notices them after they arrive at her outpost at the end of the area just before her battle. The first time, they find her after a brief segment shadowed by forest trees, where she finishes adjusting a molten rock puzzle and flies away without noticing Clover. The second time, they encounter Martlet while she is fixing a sign in front of the bridge puzzle, which she subsequently breaks when flying away. She leaves notes on all the puzzles she made, and all the puzzles that Clover encounters during their Snowdin journey appear to be hers.

After the first molten rock puzzle, Clover finds Slurpy stuck to a pole because three dogs dared him to lick it. This prompts a short sidequest involving the Honeydew Coffee, Soggy Mitten, Snowdin Map, Matches and the Lukewarm Coffee, which can finally be used to free Slurpy and obtain the Silver Scarf from him.

North of the dilapidated shack, Mo introduces himself to Clover. He places his stand and sells Hot Pop, Lukewarm Pop and Cold Pop for 15G each. If all three items are bought, he thanks Clover, sends off his stand, and exits. Going further to the north, Clover meets Mail Whale, who introduces them to the mail system provided by the Underground Postal Service and gives them the Intro Letter.

Snowdin as an area has no formal mid-area bosses, but The Shufflers are the closest there is, given they are encountered mid-area and only once. They are a gang of cup-looking monsters who make passengers play a cup-shuffling minigame. Clover has to correctly guess the correct cup under which an orange ball is hidden to pass, or fail to do so six times, after which The Shufflers let them pass. The next area is the Honeydew Resort, where Clover can SAVE, use another Dimensional Box, buy items from the Honeydew Shopkeeper, pick up the Golden Coffee and interact with several NPCs relevant to the Slurpy sidequest.

At the end of the area there is Martlet's outpost and her battle, in which she can be defeated by either insulting, confusion, or fighting. If defeated by insulting or confusion, she travels down the river north of her outpost with Clover, on a boat called UG Aviator, Ava for short. The river is supposed to take them to Hotland, but after misjudging the route they end up in the Dunes, with Ava crashing into a rock in the West Mines, Clover falling down another chasm, and Martlet flying away. If Clover ends Martlet's battle by fighting, she flies away and Flowey congratulates them on defeating their first Royal Guard. They ride Ava alone but still crash into the West Mines. Fighting Martlet does not abort a Pacifist Route.

Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

After Martlet's battle in a Pacifist Route, Clover can backtrack through Snowdin to see various monsters they fought as NPCs that they can interact with, just like in the Dark Ruins.

After reaching the Sunnyside Farm, Dalv writes Clover a letter detailing how he moved to Snowdin alongside other Dark Ruins monsters and invites them to visit. They can then see all Dark Ruins monsters, except for Decibat, around Snowdin, and interact with them. Dalv can be found near the dilapidated shack, along with Pops, his baggage, and a Flier (who helped Dalv move out).

In the Pacifist Route ending credits, Snowdin appears several times:

  • Dalv is playing the organ at the Honeydew Resort,
  • Slurpy is either being pulled off the pole by the Red Miner or swimming at the Honeydew Resort's hot spring depending on if Clover freed him,
  • Mo is at his regular stand, with varying amount of customers depending on how many items Clover bought from him, and
  • Ceroba is bringing a basket of corn to Dalv's new house; he has fixed up and moved into the dilapidated shack.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

After Clover exits the Dark Ruins, Flowey tells them that nobody will know what they did in there, as no one visits, but that they should think carefully going forward.

After all monsters in the area are killed (excluding Martlet), most NPCs leave the area, with the exception of Adventurers, Slurpy (who cannot be unstuck from his pole), Jane Doe and Wanda, the log in front of Honeydew Resort, and Rodney's Band. The second cutscene with Martlet fixing the sign does not play if the kill count is exhausted before that point.

After reaching Martlet, she does not recognize Clover as the threat at first, allowing them to hit her three times before a harder variant of her final battle starts. After reaching a point where the next hit would deal a fatal blow, she flies away from the battle.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Entrance to Delta Rock[edit | edit source]

Clover enters this part of Snowdin from Dark Ruins. Since the Dark Ruins are below the Ruins, this part of Snowdin is below the Snowdin seen in Undertale. The exit from Dark Ruins is accompanied by a row of trees from the north, similarly to Undertale, but soon the road turns north towards a large rock with the Delta Rune on it and a SAVE point in front. Sweet Corn appears near the exit on a Pacifist Route, waiting for her siblings to get out of Dark Ruins.

Behind the Delta Rock there is a cave blocked off by a large boulder. In front of the boulder, the Adventurers have set up a campfire after getting lost on their honeymoon. The Red Miner appears here to try and remove the boulder, but they procrastinate on their job instead.

To the east, there is a scripted encounter with Frostermit, a Dimensional Box and a large ice pond with a hole in it. On a Pacifist Route, Penilla appears here, admiring the beauty of the pond.

Molten Rock Puzzle 1[edit | edit source]

Snowdin location molten rock puzzle 1.png

After passing through a segment shadowed by trees, Clover reaches the area where Martlet first appears, and she flies away without noticing them. On the puzzle that she fled away from, she left a lengthy note about how to solve it, forgetting that monsters are not normally able to see most of the puzzle.

The puzzle, which is Clover's first in Snowdin, involves a molten rock rolling down a wooden trail. The molten rock's path is blocked by three wooden bars which break the molten rock upon contact. The player can move the bars using arrow keys; all bars move at the same time. The goal is to clear the molten rock's path so that it reaches the bottom, melts the ice cube, and opens the gate. To melt the ice cube completely, two molten rocks need to reach the bottom of the wooden path.

Slurpy to Mo[edit | edit source]

The secret area hidden between the dilapidated shack and leafless tree areas, variant with Wanda.

After the first puzzle, Clover reaches the area with Slurpy. To the east, there is a large field with a dilapidated shack, near which Dalv appears after reaching the Sunnyside Farm if no monsters were killed in Dark Ruins. Know Cone also appears in the area after defeating Martlet.

East of the dilapidated shack, there is a black, leafless tree with icicles on it and the Awkward Guy NPC. Interacting with the tree causes icicles to fall into to the crystal below it and form Ice Pellets. Exiting this area while the Fun Value is between 30 and 39 brings Clover to a secret room with either Jane Doe or Wanda, depending on the Fun Value.

North of the dilapidated shack area is a scripted encounter with Insomnitot, as well as Mo's stand where he sells pops. Initially, he leaves a coffee table with coffee on it in this area, but kicks the table away during his entrance.

Snowcastles to Shufflers[edit | edit source]

The next area contains a scripted encounter with Know Cone, and a large snowcastle with smaller snowcastles inside of it. There is a small ice lake in this area, internally called obj_sans_lake, and Trihecta appear here after defeating Martlet. To the east of this area, the Ice Wolf NPC is throwing ice cubes from an endless pile of ice cubes into the river, similarly to how they do in Snowdin Town in Undertale.

Further on, there is the first UGPS station, where Mail Whale appears to introduce Clover to the UGPS and give them the Intro Letter. After a SAVE point, The Shufflers appear to block Clover's path and force them to play a cup shuffling game.

Honeydew Resort[edit | edit source]

Honeydew Resort lodge seen from the outside.
Main article: Honeydew Resort

The Honeydew Resort is a place where monsters can relax and destress. Here, Clover can find the Honeydew Shopkeeper, the Golden Coffee item, and several NPCs relevant to the Slurpy sidequest.

Bridge Puzzle[edit | edit source]

Bridge puzzle in Snowdin.

Following the Honeydew Resort, in the area where Clover encounters Martlet for the second time, there is a puzzle with planks of wood swinging over a bridge, each one slightly faster than previous. To cross it, Clover has to pass each segment of the puzzle while the plank aligns with the bridge. If they are not aligned, they fall onto a pillow in the room below, similarly to the third XOXO puzzle in Undertale.

The bridge leads to another area shadowed by trees, with three signs that point towards each other. Insomnitot appears in this area after defeating Martlet. The next room is a turn north with Coffee Bean Ammo in one of the barrels.

Molten Rock Puzzle 2[edit | edit source]

Second molten rock puzzle.

A second instance of a molten rock puzzle in Snowdin, this time with molten rocks falling down vertically so that monsters can clearly see the puzzle that they are solving. It functions the same as the first puzzle, but instead of wooden bars the player must move platforms vertically to make way for the rock to pass. Unlike in the first puzzle, if the molten rock loses momentum before reaching the ice cube, it breaks. On a tarp in the background of the puzzle, Delta Rune graffiti with letters "MRLT" can be seen, implying that it was drawn by Martlet.

Following this area there is a room with a SAVE point, Dimensional Box, and three benches on a platform. Under the third bench, a Honeydew Pancake can be found. This area is meant as a preparation for the upcoming Martlet battle.

Martlet's Outpost and House[edit | edit source]

The area's final boss battle against Martlet happens in this area. An outpost similar to that of Sans and the Royal Guards from Undertale appears in the center of the room, where Martlet sleeps. After the battle, Clover can visit a room with the river, the UG Aviator that leads them to the Dunes, and a broken bridge to Martlet's house.

The bridge to Martlet's house is fixed once Clover visits the Sunnyside Farm, so they can go back and cross it to enter the area with Martlet's house. Other than her house, which Clover cannot enter, there are Ava's remains and Martlet's diary in front. Martlet's diary talks about how she found tinkering as her hobby, Chujin as her mentor, and Royal Guard as her workplace (that Chujin was displeased about). In this same area, the cutscene with Martlet telling Chujin about her new job during the final battle of the Genocide Route plays.

Development[edit | edit source]

Devlogs[edit | edit source]

Area in Snowdin revealed in August 2017, conceptualized by Figburn and sprited by GlitchedPie, hinting at a location that can be visited.

Snowdin is the next area after the Dark Ruins, and as such was not fully revealed until the full game. However, devlogs revealed a big portion of Snowdin content prior to the game's full release. Development (specifically, programming) on Snowdin started in September 2017,[6] was halfway done by January 2018,[7] and finished in February 2019.[8] Due to programming issues, the overworld engine had to be rewritten twice, which significantly delayed Snowdin development.[9][10]

In April 2017, Slurpy was revealed with accompanying concept art from Nero.[11] In June 2017, more new content was shown: the new battle grid, Blizzard Approaching, and the Delta Rock area.[12] In August 2017, they revealed artwork concepted by Figburn[13] and sprited by GlitchedPie,[14] which revealed an area in Snowdin that appears to be Honeydew Resort. September's update revealed the falling snow animation.[6]

In February 2018 a Snowdin trailer was posted to YouTube, following its premiere at Atlantale 2018. The trailer revealed:

  • Adventurers and the boulder area,
  • Frostermit and the ice lake area,
  • Mail Whale, the mail system, and three mail messages:
    • the intro letter,
    • a letter containing the Cowboy article on Wikipedia, and
    • a variation on Undertale's introduction screen, stating: Wong ago, two waces wuwed uwv Eawth: HUMANS and MONSTEWS. Ony day, waw bwoke out between the two waces. Aftew a wong battwe, the humans weww victowious. They seawed the monsters undewgwoundwith a magic speww
  • area shadowed by trees,
  • first molten rock puzzle,
  • Insomnitot and the dilapidated shack area,
  • Mo and his entrance,
  • the Honeydew Shopkeeper, and
  • Ceroba's kitsune mask and the Kanako leitmotif.

Later devlogs revealed Delivery!,[15] the Honeydew Resort lodge and its NPCs, Clover's ability to run, and two animations, one of Martlet flying and the other of icicles falling off the leafless tree.[16]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

Since Slurpy's sidequest was made early on during development, and developers did not have time to change it later on, some of them consider this sidequest to be rough.[17]

  9. Both of our programmers, MysteryRacer and Spasco, have been doing a great job bringing UTY to life but their code styles are very different. Because we have been using Racer’s well-built and more complicated engine, Spasco has had a harder time adapting to the style of code, slowing general progress down. Today, we made a compromise to go back to the demo engine for the overworld but keep Racer’s engine for the fights. These two facets of UTY were what the two were working on anyway, so it doesn’t change much. We will have to remake Snowdin in the other engine but Spasco already made it once and all of the assets he needs are done. So don’t worry, this won’t be like the post-demo engine switch.
