Hotland
Hotland is a returning area from Undertale, reachable after exiting the Steamworks. It is the second to last area on the Pacifist and Genocide Routes and the last area on a Neutral Route.
The area remains as mostly the same from Undertale, but since Undertale Yellow takes place before the changes made by Mettaton, the puzzles and Mettaton branding are noticeably absent throughout the area. Additionally, only one level is accessible.
Features[edit | edit source]
- UG Apartments, the complex that used to occupy the building that later became MTT Resort.
- Bits & Bites, a vendor that sells accessories and food.
- The final bosses of the Neutral and Genocide Routes.
- A Hot Dog and Monster Candy in trash cans.
Map[edit | edit source]
Main Story[edit | edit source]
History[edit | edit source]
At the time Clover enters the Underground, Alphys has been the royal scientist for some time. Martlet used to guard the Lab entrance, allowing her to sneak in and steal determination. She was later moved to guard Snowdin. Mettaton has his robot body, though he has not become as popular a star yet, and Alphys has done the determination experiments.
Though the CORE exists at this point, it is under maintenance and cannot be entered.
Neutral Route[edit | edit source]
Clover reaches Hotland after defeating Axis. If El Bailador was spared, his dance floor is open to Clover, who he added to the VIP list. If he was killed, the dance floor is shut down.
As Martlet sent Clover a letter in the Steamworks requesting they meet on the rooftop of UG Apartments, Clover heads there. Flowey appears, asking them to turn back. Though Flowey insists that Martlet is untrustworthy, Clover does not relent, so he gives up and lets them meet her. Martlet speaks to Clover there, her conversation depending on Clover's LOVE. At a lower LV, Martlet is more optimistic and trusting, while a higher LV has her more hesitant and suspicious. However, no matter what Clover did, she tells that Clover they would have to fight Asgore to the death if they continued. To avoid this, and to help them change for the better if they are at a higher LV, she proposes for them to live with her in Snowdin. Clover can accept enthusiastically, hesitantly, or be silent, depending on how much LV they have and what the player chooses. No matter the response, Clover will not reject her offer and Martlet will begin to head off being impaled by a vine sent by Flowey. She assumes it was Clover's doing and be either confused why they did it at a lower LV or bitter because she should have known at a higher LV, before dying.
Flowey then appears, snapping at Clover for abandoning their goal and mocking them for Martlet thinking they were the attacker. Clover interrupts him by trying to initiate a fight with him, but he loads his SAVE to stop them. He mocks them one final time before creating a ring of friendliness pellets which kills Clover, allowing him to absorb their SOUL. Flowey's final boss fight happens in his mind.
Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]
Right before Clover and Ceroba Ketsukane reach Hotland, Starlo and Ed separate them and Clover detours to explore the Ketsukane Estate with Martlet. Afterwards, Clover can return to the Steamworks to enter Hotland.
Everything besides the rooftop is the same as in the Neutral Route. Clover must still go to the rooftop, meeting with Martlet as planned. She expresses her admiration for Clover for always doing the right thing and partners up with them to stop Ceroba. Martlet follows Clover through the elevator in UG Apartments to New Home to confront Ceroba.
Genocide Route[edit | edit source]
Clover reaches Hotland after obliterating Axis. The whole area was evacuated, leaving it empty. They go to the rooftop to fight Martlet. She begins monologuing, but Clover cuts her off by raising their gun against her and initiating combat.
Before Clover moves, she monologues. She laments how she did not stop them before and tells Clover they should have finished her when they had the chance. She injects herself with Determination and begins her final boss fight against Clover. She starts to melt in her second phase and eventually dies, leveling up Clover to LV 20, the maximum. Flowey then appears, complaining that the Underground is now most likely on lockdown and ordering Clover to go to the Castle, accidentally revealing his true motivation - stealing the souls for himself. Clover, now with enough determination to control the timeline, prevents Flowey from fighting back or escaping them killing him.
Martlet and Clover's fight heavily damaged the rooftop. Below, the power at UG Apartments has gone out, with the exception of the elevator to New Home. Clover takes the elevator to finally confront Asgore.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Hotland still has the same physical layout as in Undertale, though only the area from elevator R3 to the eastern door of Muffet's lair is available.
Crossroads[edit | edit source]
This room connects most of the accessible rooms in Hotland. To the east is elevator R3 leading to the Steamworks, to the south is Club Danza, to the west are two miscellaneous rooms, and to the north is UG Apartments. This room also contains a UGPS station.
Club Danza[edit | edit source]
Club Danza is in the location where the colored tile puzzle from Undertale was, but a disco dance floor replaces the tile puzzle. A neon sign states it is called Club Danza. If El Bailador was spared, there is a line wanting to be let into the club. Clover is let in by the bouncer, as they are on the VIP list. El Bailador stands on the floor near several types of Frostermits. El Bailador tells Clover a bit of his backstory and encourages them to dance. If Clover stands still on the tiles, there is an easter egg where they begin dancing.
If El Bailador was killed, the dance floor and neon sign are turned off. On a Neutral Route where he was killed, the bouncer is still by the entrance, but the line is gone and he expresses concern for El Bailador missing "crab hour." On a Genocide Route, nobody is in the room.
Western Rooms[edit | edit source]
There are two rooms west of the central room. The westmost room is the door to Muffet's lair, but it is blocked off by spider construction. The eastern room contains the producer in front of the house they just bought. Clover is not allowed inside, as it is still under renovation. This room connects to Club Danza to the south.
UG Apartments[edit | edit source]
- Main article: UG Apartments
The UG Apartments is where the MTT Resort is in Undertale. The layout and general appearance of the rooms are the same. The dining room and hallway is similar to their appearance in Undertale. The lobby has new NPCs, and the Mettaton statue is replaced by the statue from Waterfall. The dining room has new decor and NPCs. The hallway, unlike Undertale, has no fetch quests and Clover cannot rent a room.
Bits & Bites is a shop in the back of the lobby. They sell items and armor.
Alleyway and Rooftop[edit | edit source]
A trail of blue feathers leads from UG Apartments into the eastern alleyway, where Bratty and Catty set up shop in Undertale. A Hot Dog and a Monster Candy can be found in trash cans here. On a Neutral Route, Flowey will pop up here and try to dissuade Clover from convening with Martlet.
Clover will meet up with Martlet on the rooftop of UG Apartments on all three routes. The CORE is visible from this location.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- When Clover fistbumps Martlet on the roof in the Pacifist Route, their sprite smiles. This is the only time their sprite changes expression in the game.
- The UG Apartments alleyway is where the yellow SOUL's equipment, the Empty Gun and Cowboy Hat, is sold in Undertale.
