Axis Model 014, better known as Axis, is the boss of the Steamworks. He is the final model of a line of robots invented by Chujin Ketsukane to serve as mechanical royal guards.

Profile[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Axis is a gray, metallic robot with a large box-shaped head, a round torso, and a single leg with a wheel on the bottom. His head has two pink, unevenly sized eyes and a horizontal line of four bolts or holes resembling a mouth on the front, a vertical antenna ending with a round lightbulb on each side, and a lightbulb and a curled exhaust pipe on the top. His torso has a black heart symbol on the front with four bolts or holes surrounding it, another four bolts or holes in the same arrangement on the back, a light peach-colored gear sticking out the right side, and an exhaust pipe sticking out sideways from each shoulder. His hands wear light peach-colored gloves hover independently of his body, though his shoulder pipes emit smoke clouds that float into his wrists, implying a connection.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

After being shot by Clover at the beginning of the route in the Steamworks, Axis is permanently damaged. His left eye is shattered and the casing around it is removed. His left antenna becomes damaged and its lightbulb disappears. Additionally, the lightbulb on the center of his head cracks and no longer emits light.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Axis is very persistent when it comes to guarding the Steamworks. Once he catches sight of an intruder, he becomes single-minded in his pursuit of them. Despite his physical agility, his effectiveness as a guard is greatly hampered by his gullibility and slow wit. He inadvertently allows Clover and Ceroba to escape his capture several times and easily falls for obvious tricks.

Though he may seem an unsophisticated robot, Axis is a sentient being shown to experience intense, complex emotions. He is short-tempered, easily flustered, and evidently quite foul-mouthed (though his swearing is replaced with milder language by what appears to be a profanity filter). He is also capable of experiencing love; when presented with a 'companion robot' Clover and Ceroba built to distract him with, he becomes besotted with it and declares it his spouse. He also greatly misses Chujin, for his late creator was kind to him. In the Genocide Route, Axis expresses remorse over killing the previous fallen human.

Main Story[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

Axis was created by Chujin when he worked at the Steamworks. He was built to serve as a defense mechanism against humans. Unlike other bots in the Steamworks, which are part of a hivemind, Axis does not operate under this control.

Chujin presented many failed prototypes to Asgore, which self-destructed in various humiliating ways. When showing Model 08 to Asgore, it malfunctioned. Sparks flew from the machine, causing a patch of the king's flower bed to set ablaze. Though the fire was quickly put out, Asgore thanked Chujin for his service to monsterkind and told him to not return.

Some time later, the Blue SOUL human arrived in the Underground. The human got into a fight with the friend of Kanako Ketsukane, who she was with at the time, before fleeing to Waterfall. Chujin felt it to be his responsibility to order Axis to hunt down this human, prioritizing giving this order over comforting Kanako. Axis was swift to get the job done, immediately making his way to Waterfall. Due to an error in his code, he killed the human. This is indicated within the Genocide Route to be something that Axis did not willingly carry out. Chujin confiscated the human SOUL for experimentation and Axis was presumably returned to the Steamworks. His memory was wiped of the attack and Chujin expressed a desire to keep improving on him.

Some time after this, Chujin was fired. The Steamworks shut down and was replaced by the CORE, so Axis was powered down for a long time. The other iterations of Axis have ceased to function by the time Clover enters the Steamworks.

Neutral Route[edit | edit source]

Clover first encounters Axis in the second building of the Steamworks. Axis comes out of a door and notes their various crimes, notably being a human. If Clover tries to plead not guilty, he goes with his nonexistent gut and assumes they are lying. Axis traps Clover in a room that they very easily escape. Axis later follows Clover into the next building and starts a chase sequence, only to crash into a couple of servers. He later appears on the long hallway that follows the chase area, and attempts to attack Clover with energy orbs. At the end of the section, he corners Clover and attempts to attack them, but Flowey incapacitates him and forces him to retreat. He then reappears at the chemistry lab after Clover destroys the lock on the sealed door with the Hydrochloric Acid. He appears with a vial of his own and asks to use it on Clover. No matter if Clover accepts this or not, he drops the vial on himself, making a hole in the floor and falling in it.

He is absent until Clover deactivates the Steamworks robots and reaches the Furnace. There, Axis momentarily appears deactivated before he actives his backup power. He attempts to attack Clover, but he is stopped by his programming. He gives Clover a trash can lid so they become a “threat”, and initiates battle. If knocked out, he will appear calmer, as his “programmed murderous rage” will be disabled. Clover can then compliment him three times to spare Axis. After this, he will talk about the future of the Steamworks and its bots. He will then appear on the locker room in the beginning of the Steamworks as an overworld NPC, where he talks more about the bots of the Steamworks and wishes Clover a good journey. If Clover chooses to kill him during the battle, Axis attempts to contact Chujin for repairs before dying. The sound of a monster turning to dust plays, but Axis's body is not destroyed.

Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

Clover first encounters Axis in the same room as the Neutral Route, though there exists new dialogue as Ceroba tags along. Ceroba's presence results in several minor changes, such as her incapacitating Axis rather than Flowey at the end of the chase scene, along with changes in dialogue. The path is later derailed because of Ceroba having access to Chujin's credentials, and they enter the Factory Wing. Axis reappears at the Gold Production section of the Factory Wing. He attempts to apprehend Clover and Ceroba, but trips on a wire, causing the lights to go out and forcing him to activate flashlight mode. He patrols the area until Clover and Ceroba figure out the code to the next level, after which they quickly run from him.

He is absent until Clover and Ceroba reach the Furnace, where his encounter and battle are mostly the same, albeit with some dialogue changes. If Clover chooses to SPARE Axis, the ACT option 'Compliment' is replaced with 'Plan B' in which Clover presents Axis with the 'robot' they created. This results in Axis becoming infatuated with the robot and ending the fight. If Clover decides to abort the Pacifist Route through killing Axis, Ceroba will lash out at Clover and exclaim that 'I never want to see you again'. This kill results in special dialogue from Flowey, detailing how Ceroba was only using them anyway.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

During the Genocide Route, a majority of Clover and Axis' roles are reversed, resulting in Axis being the victim of Clover's murderous rampage. Clover first encounters Axis in the same room as the previously mentioned routes, though the cutscene is essentially inverted. Axis scans Clover and immediately realizes the high threat they are. He bypasses his empathy and informs that Clover’s objective is not possible, as the five humans have died, and tries to initiate a battle. Clover cuts this off by shooting him several times in the overworld. This unblocks his memories and he suddenly remembers the blue SOUL human.

He states his need to evacuate and he escapes through the trapdoor that Clover is normally sent down before they get the chance to finish him. During the chase scene, Axis runs away while Clover pursues, and he is absent from the long hallway afterwards. The Guardener encounter is completely skipped; it is replaced with a cutscene where Axis warns her to hide. In his encounter at the Chemistry Lab, he only speaks from behind the door, pleading Clover to stop their rampage and that he can explain everything. After Clover shoots the door, he states that brute force won’t do anything and that the Steamworks inhabitants are survivors. Axis makes his final appearance at the Furnace, where he expresses regret by saying that he saved all he could, but he is satisfied with the fact that Clover will leave unsatisfied. He remarks that while he may die, he will no longer run away from Clover. He protects himself with the trashcan lid that is given to Clover in the Neutral and Pacifist routes, saying he has drawn a “weapon” of his own. He then challenges Clover and their battle begins.

Axis is impervious to Clover's attacks due to the lid, and Clover has no choice but to wait it out. Eventually, he tries to explain himself to Clover while they continuously interrupt him by shooting at him, which he continues to block. He says that his limited will left him no choice before finally revealing that he was forced to kill the Integrity human. Clover then fully heals themself and levels up to LV 15, much to Axis’s confusion. Clover turns their soul around and charges an attack, but even though Axis tries to block it, the lid is destroyed instantly. Axis begs for forgiveness while Clover charges their soul again and levels up to LV 19. They then launch a massive laser, splitting Axis in half through his core, rendering him dead.

If Clover aborts the Genocide Route by not exhausting Steamworks's kill counter, then spares Axis, he will inform Clover on how much he hates them.

In Battle[edit | edit source]

Attacks[edit | edit source]

Neutral/Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

Lid.png

During Axis's battle, he will equip Clover with a trashcan lid so they count as a threat. Clover needs to use this lid as a shield to block his attacks.

A lot of Axis's attacks consist of throwing objects from the top of the board. If they hit the ground, Clover will take damage.

The fight display has two meters: Tick O'Bar and battery. Clover blocking attacks with the lid causes the Tick O'Bar to fill. When it reaches maximum capacity, Axis will fire a large energy orb at Clover, which they can reflect to hit him. If they miss him or the orb hits the bottom, Clover will not take damage and this attack will repeat next turn. Once hit, this drains his battery, resets the Tick O'Bar, and moves the fight to the next phase. Draining his entire battery allows him to be spared.

Phase 1:

  • A single energy orb falls from the top of the Bullet Board. This is only used in the intro.
  • Energy orbs fall diagonally from the top of the top of the Bullet Board, bouncing every time they hit a border.

Phase 2:

  • The SOUL is put in the center of the board as energy orbs periodically move towards it.
  • The SOUL is put in the center. Two hands appear outside the Bullet Board. After a brief animation, the hands will start firing a laser, which will start sweeping clockwise, then change to counter-clockwise, and finally clockwise again.

Phase 3:

  • Energy orbs fall straight from the top of the board, while a blue laser sweeps vertically from one one edge to the other of the board.
  • The SOUL is put in the center. Energy orbs move towards the SOUL, while a orange laser sweeps horizontally from one edge to the other of the board.

Phase 4:

  • Steam spheres rise from the bottom of the board, just like the minigames earlier in the Steamworks.
  • Bombs are lobbed from both sides of the board.

Phase 5:

  • Energy orbs fall from the top of board, while two lasers, one orange and one blue, sweep from the center of the board.
  • The SOUL is put at the center. Bombs are lobbed from the borders of the boards towards it.

Phase 6:

  • The SOUL is put in the center. Six energy orbs appear in a hexagonal formation, flashing red in succession. After a moment, they start moving towards the SOUL in the order they flashed.
  • Three small sparkles appear around the board. After that, turrets which shoot 3 blasts before disappearing appear in the order the glimpses appeared.

Phase 7:

  • Three small sparkles followed by shooting turrets appear once again, but this time, the turrets move while shooting 5 blasts.
  • The SOUL is put in the center. Energy orbs move towards it, while horizontal blue lasers continuously appear from the top of the board.

Phase 8:

  • The SOUL is put in the center. Energy orbs slowly move towards it.
  • Turrets surround the board, with one of them playing a small animation. After a moment, that turret unloads 5 blasts.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

As Axis is holding the trash lid, he cannot be hit and this fight's special SOUL mode is not seen. This is the same in a Genocide Route aborted by failing to reach the Steamworks kill count, the only difference being the ending.

  • Sets of three energy orbs spawn outside the Bullet Board. After a moment, they will enter it, bouncing every time they hit a wall until disappearing.
  • Two lasers, one orange and other blue, will sweep from opposite directions towards the other side of the board. They may come horizontally or vertically.
  • Orange and blue lasers will sweep vertically and horizontally, while sets of three orbs spawn either vertically and horizontally, bouncing in those directions.
  • Bombs are lobbed from outside the board before exploding in a cross pattern.
  • Energy orbs are spawned from outside the board, while bombs are also lobbed from outside the board.
  • Bombs are lobbed from outside the board while orange and blue lasers sweep horizontally and vertically.
  • Sets of three turrets circle around the SOUL before firing three blasts.
  • A grid of turrets spawns outside the board. After two red flashes, two turrets (one from the vertical grid and one from the horizontal grid) disappear according to what turrets didn’t appear red in the last flash.
  • Four homing energy orbs spawn outside the board and pursue the SOUL until the attack ends.
  • A single homing energy orb spawns and pursues the SOUL, while blue lasers sweep horizontally and vertically.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

Neutral/Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

Clover can fill the Tick O'Meter at the top right of the screen by blocking attacks. When it is full, Axis will fire a bigger red sphere. Clover needs to deflect this sphere at Axis to deplete his battery depicted as a green meter at the top left of the screen. Alternatively, Clover may ATTACK Axis directly while the bar is full for the same effect (should you fail at deflecting the energy ball back at Axis). This has no effect on the Pacifist status of the run unless they do not spare him at the end, but unlike the reflection, attacking deals damage and can be useful if using ammo like the Coffee Bean Ammo or the Glass Ammo.

Once Axis is shut down, Clover can spare him by Complimenting him on the Neutral Route or Plan B on the Pacifist Route.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

By using the trashcan lid, Axis is impervious to Clover's attacks for most of the battle. Their only option is to wait it out. No matter what, the fight will end after the 10th turn. This means that Clover is able to regularly heal, though lower health items are preferable as higher health ones will be needed for a later fight.

Axis cannot be spared as Clover automatically charges up the shot from their SOUL to kill him after 10 turns. However, if the route is aborted by failing to exhaust Steamworks's kill counter, Axis instead cools off after 10 turns, making him spareable. This also means once the Steamworks’s kill counter has been exhausted, the Genocide Route can no longer be aborted.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • If Axis catches Clover during the Neutral/Pacifist Route chase sequences, they are sent to the security station where they can exit anytime by entering the vent at the top-right of the room. This is also where the Fun Value event can occur if the Fun Value is between 16 and 19.
    • Once Clover exits the security station, they have to retry the chase sequence; however, as of version 1.1, Axis pursues Clover more slowly the more he catches them.
      • If Clover backtracks after being caught, once they exit the corridor, a cutscene will be triggered where Axis can be seen wandering around, before spotting Clover and sending them back to the same security station. The dialogues changes if Clover does this more than once.
  • On the Genocide Route, it is optional to chase down Axis as there are no interactions nor can they collide with him even when the player uses certain glitches or cheats to catch him.
    • Additionally, once Axis starts to flee during the chase sequence, if Clover leaves the room by going back instead of pursuing Axis, the chase sequence do not occur again when they return to the same room where the chase would occur.
  • The generators' explosion animation and sound effect are identical to that which appears as a running gag in Deltarune.
  • Axis cannot use exclamation marks (!).
  • When decoded from binary, Axis's mail titled "MAIL???", which usually reads "1001001 100000 1000100 1001111 100000 1001110 1001111 1010100 100000 1001011 1001110 1001111 1010111 100000 1001000 1001111 1010111 100000 1010100 1001111 100000 1010011 1000101 1001110 1000100 100000 1001100 1000101 1010100 1010100 1000101 1010010 1010011 101110 100000 1001000 1000101 1001100 1010000 100000 1001101 1000101 101110" translates to "I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SEND LETTERS. HELP ME."
  • A promotional artwork posted by the developers on their June 2022 Devlog has several fliers teasing the Feisty Five. One of these fliers simply has attached a phone number and the binary code "01001110 01000101 01000100 00100000 01000111 01000110". The code translates to "NED GF". Since Axis is the only character who has spoken in binary, this was presumably hinting towards him.
  • Axis is the only enemy in the Steamworks who rewards EXP when killed.
  • During Axis's boss fight on the Genocide Route, the SOUL in the action menu starts to shake after Axis's first turn and gradually shakes more intensively as more turns pass. This is not the case if the Genocide Route has been aborted by failing to exhaust Steamworks's kill counter.
  • Strangely, the trashcan lid is still present on the trashcan after killing Axis on the Genocide Route despite the lid being destroyed by Clover's charged shot after their LV went up to 15.
  • Even if Axis was killed after aborting the Genocide Route at Steamworks, he will still use the Neutral Route variant of his attacks during Flowey’s boss fight; Clover will be equipped with the trashcan lid despite Axis using the lid for himself.
  • The first model of Axis was built and presented to Asgore on March 19. This date is the birthday of Undertale Yellow's director MasterSwordRemix.
  • By backtracking in the Steamworks after beating Axis, he can be found in the first locker room at the start of the Steamworks as an NPC, which reveals several details about him.
    • His Neutral Route dialogue reveals the following:
      • After Axis recharges, he has to perform a scan to remember people.[1]
      • Axis blushes a bright gray.[2]
      • Axis has an E-Diary.[3]
    • His Pacifist Route dialogue reveals:
      • Axis can function on love alone, and doesn't need to recharge.[4]
      • The custom robot is named Daisy.[5]
      • Axis is already thinking about having children.[6]
