El Bailador is one of the minibosses of the Dunes, encountered at the top of the mountain in which the East Mines are located. His battle introduces a new SOUL mode, first revealed in a trailer in December 2019.[1]

He was originally designed by NoteBlock,[2] with battle programming done by MysteryRacer, modifications by Deadkat, and the Genocide Route battle programming by Spasco.[3]

Profile[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

El Bailador is a muscular, humanoid monster standing at twice Clover's height. He has red skin with yellow triangular markings running across his collarbone. He has white eyes, a blond feathery mohawk, broad shoulders, and well-defined abs. His mouth is triangular in shape, but forms a 'W' shape when smiling.

He wears a costume reminiscent of a luchador (Mexican wrestler), consisting of long yellow gloves, dark red trunks fastened by a gold belt with a rhombus-shaped buckle, and gold knee-length leg armor. His long orange cape with yellow trimming has a lining colored in three vertical strips from left to right: blue, green and red, the reverse order of the dance mat he presents during the battle. His face appears to be covered by an orange luchador mask with orange eyepieces resembling long lashes. This apparent mask does not seem to cover his mouth, as it visibly moves when he speaks.

Personality[edit | edit source]

El Bailador greatly enjoys dancing and longs to share his passion with others. He despises solitude and quietness, and uses dance to distract himself from the dire situation of being trapped below the surface. He also wants to cheer the other monsters up and bring joy to the Underground.

When facing Clover on the Genocide Route, he gets very upset about Clover not sharing his appreciation for dance, and apologizes for being an inconvenience. If spared, he leaves in a socially awkward way. He does not understand quiet monsters, such as Decibat.[4]

Main Story[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

At some point before the events of Undertale Yellow, El Bailador and Decibat used to live together on the top floor of the UG Apartments.[4] The Sentinels of Silence occupied one side of the hall, and The Sentinels of Sound occupied the other. They fought over the volume levels for weeks, until they were all kicked out.

Neutral/Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

After exiting the East Mines and climbing to the top of the mountain, El Bailador ambushes Clover and challenges them to a dance-off. This triggers a unique battle in which the SOUL has to hit notes falling in a certain rhythm. If he is spared, he realizes that Clover may not enjoy dance as much as he does, and bids them farewell as he jumps down the mountain the same way he entered. If he is killed, he says he did not even realize Clover was fighting him before he dies.

El Bailador owns a dance club called Club Danza (sharing the name with his battle theme) in the southern part of Hotland. If spared, he puts Clover on the guest list of the club. Clover arrives to the club during "crab hour," when the club is particularly crowded with various species of Frostermit, who are presented as El Bailador's understudies. He invites Clover to dance once again, but remembers that they aren't keen on dancing and tells them his history with Decibat and the other Sentinels of Silence instead.

If El Bailador is killed, the NPC at the entrance tells Clover that the club is closed, and that El Bailador isn't answering his phone. He appears during Flowey's boss fight, attacking Clover with a Genocide Route variant of his regular attacks.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

During his battle, El Bailador eventually realizes that Clover is uninterested, gets sad and apologizes for the inconvenience, which results in Clover killing him and continuing their journey. Like with all minibosses on the Genocide Route, if the kill count for the Dunes is exhausted before entering the room with El Bailador, he does not appear and his fight is skipped entirely.

In Battle[edit | edit source]

Attacks[edit | edit source]

El Bailador uses a unique form of attacking where the bullet board is split into three lanes that the player can move into and back by holding down the movement keys. Red, green, and blue bars will come down from the top of the left, middle, and right lanes respectively. As the battle progresses, they will start to come down faster and faster. The player needs to press Z when the bars reach an outlined spot right above their area. If the player misses a bar or presses Z at the wrong time, they will take damage.

In the Genocide Route version of his battle, if the encounters weren't already exhausted, Clover can just move around the bars like normal, and they'll fall down after touching the spots.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

Much like the previous bosses, Clover can spare El Bailador by dodging for twelve turns. However, due to the syncopation of the notes, it is suggested to turn off the volume entirely and simply concentrate on the bars themselves. This may make it harder for some due to the lack of rhythm for some.

Turning Auto-Rhythm on in settings will allow the player to automatically hit the notes.

Game Over Quotes[edit | edit source]

  • Come on, buddy! Surely you can dance better than THAT!
  • Do you have good rhythm? 'Cause it kinda seems like you need it.
  • Talk about over the top... Let's show this showoff who's boss!

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • El Bailador's name appears to be a portmanteau of "bailar", meaning to dance, and "luchador." "Bailador" is also the colloquial term for dancer in Spanish, directly translating as "someone who dances".[5]
  • There is a bug in which the game marks El Bailador's battle as skipped when the room where he is fought is entered after exhausting the Dunes's kill counter, even if he was previously killed. This means that it is possible to meet El Bailador in Hotland after killing him on a Genocide Route, by exhausting the Dunes's kill counter, going back to his room and then aborting the route. This also prevents El Bailador from appearing in Flowey's boss fight as a distorted version of himself.
