Fun Value is a random variable in Undertale Yellow which is initialized to a value between 0 and 80[1] when resetting a SAVE file and determines which rare events may happen in the game, similarly to Undertale.

Events[edit | edit source]

Swig's name[edit | edit source]

When the fun value is set to 1, the game changes Swig's name to "Dave."[2]

Chair Man[edit | edit source]

When the fun value is between 2 and 10, a Man sitting on a Chair[3] appears in the Wild East saloon's stage before the second mission starts, and when the value is between 9 and 18 he appears at Honeydew Resort's stage. Once Clover exits the room they are in, the Chair man no longer appears.[2]

Annoying Dog[edit | edit source]

The Box Conveyor Puzzle in the Steamworks will spit out an Annoying Dog after 7 items when the Fun Value is between 11 and 15.[2]

Security Station[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 16 and 19, the security station in Steamworks displays a face (resembling Ice-E from Undertale and Deltarune) grinning on the display. When the player checks the TV, this person appears to scream, after which the TV is turned off. This occurrence likely serves as a nod to the iconic jumpscares from the Five Nights at Freddy's series, but it may also be a reference to a recurring joke in Deltarune, where Noelle has a childhood fear of the ICE-E's P"e"zza mascot.[2]

Pillar Room[edit | edit source]

All four of the Fun Value pillar drawings.

Depending on where the fun value is between 20 and 29, the designs on the four pillars in the Pillar Room may change.

  • Between values 20 and 22, the first pillar has a drawing of Dalv and shows "A familiar figure." when interacted with.[citation needed]
  • Between values 21 and 23, the second pillar shows a character similar to Axis and the text "An unknown entity." when interacted with.[citation needed]
  • Between values 24 and 26, the third pillar, rather than displaying the caterpillar, depicts a humanoid figure in a skirt. The pillar is broken at where their face should be. This presumably depicts the murder of the blue soul by Axis. When interacted with, the text reads "..."[citation needed]
  • Between values 27 and 29, the fourth pillar displays a drawing of a SOUL on it and shows "Somebody's... SOUL?" when interacted with.[citation needed]

These four drawings appear to be depicting the Snowdin Attack and the events that followed: Dalv running after being attacked, Axis sent after the human, the human with the tutu having been attacked by Axis, and finally the human's obtained SOUL.

Jane Doe and Wanda[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 30 and 39, Clover gets transported to a secret area after returning from the area where Ice Pellets are found in the Snowdin forest.[2]

  • If the value is between 30 and 34, they encounter a deer-like monster named Jane (full name is Jane Doe in the game files).[4] They claim to be searching for a resident who went missing and trying to figure out how the forest is developing impossible geography, as they don't believe it is a doing of magic.[2]
    • This is actually referenced in the book "Mysteries of the Underground" as well. Inside the book, a short story titled, "The Path" is shared about a Monster only referred to as "____" going missing after going for a fishing trip in Snowdin with their father and wandering off the path into the forest.
  • If the value is between 35 and 39, they encounter a unicorn-like monster named Wanda. She appears to have wandered into the woods due to her (supposedly online) boyfriend named Mikey not paying attention to her.[2]

Duck[edit | edit source]

When travelling by boat between Snowdin and Hotland, a duck appears if the Fun Value is between 40 and 45.[2]

Gerson[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 51 and 55, a door appears in North Mines, in the second room after the fall into Dunes. The door leads to a room with Gerson from Undertale. He has the following dialogue:

When interacted with for the first time: [2]

  • Say, another explorer in this neck of the caves?
  • Pleased to meet ya!
  • You wouldn't be in the stone-moving business, would you?
  • Ha! Only kidding around!
  • This morning, I set out on an expedition to find new wares for my shop.
  • Right as I passed through that door there, it caved in!
  • Close one, huh?
  • Sorry universe, but you won't do me in that easily!
  • Wa ha ha!

When interacted with for the second time:[2]

  • What's a young'n like you doing out here anyway?
  • Surely it wasn't to meet ol' Gerson, was it?
  • To hear one of my famous stories?
  • Surely not!

When choosing "Stories?":[2]

  • Yes! I have many great stories of the old days,
  • Though, at this point, they're more like legends!
  • You see, I used to be a hero. The Hammer of Justice!
  • I'd go round, day and night, walloping any bad guys that needed walloping.
  • This one time, I-
  • I... er...
  • I just forgot all of my stories.
  • Wa ha ha!!

When choosing "I should go": [citation needed]

  • Hey I would too if I could, wa ha ha!
  • If my memory serves, and it usually doesn't, Mining Co. is stationed around here.
  • They could clear this cave in a jiff!
  • Eh, well... the geology here IS interesting.
  • Maybe I'll stay a while, ya know?
  • Take my situation as a blessing in disguise!

When interacted with for the third time:[2]

  • If you're ever in Waterfall, be sure to stop by my shop!
  • Got plenty o'wares to sell ya!
  • No better place your allowance could go!

When interacted with for the fourth time:[2]

  • Oh, do you want me to say my catchphrase as a farewell?
  • Alright then! Ready?
  • Let justice prevail!!!
  • ...
  • Or was it "Let justice be done"?
  • Could've also been "Here comes the hammer."
  • ...
  • What can I say? I never could decide on my catchphrase!
  • Wa ha ha!

When interacted with afterwards:[2]

  • Be careful out there, kid!

Gerson will not appear during a Genocide Route.

Chujin stare[edit | edit source]

This can be seen on a Pacifist Route when the Fun Value is between 60 and 62. If you return to the Ketsukane Mansion's basement after separating from Martlet and wait by the television for a while, the static will turn into a video of Chujin before turning back to static.[2]

  • Originally, this was able to be seen when visiting for the first time with Martlet. This was patched out in Version 1.1 for affecting the mood.[5]

Everyman Wanted Poster[edit | edit source]

An additional Wanted sign displays on the Wild East news board if the Fun Value is between 63 and 64. By opening the image in an image editor and heavily increasing the contrast, the poster is revealed to contain a simple line drawing of the Everyman from Undertale and Deltarune.[2]

Game Machine[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 65 and 69, a character named "Mr. Sir"[6] appears behind the broken game machine in Café Dune. The character is colored in shades of gray and speaks to an unknown entity on the phone.

When Clover interacts with them, they claim Clover is jeopardizing the operation and tries to distract them by asking them about school.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

First interaction:[2]

  • Yep...
  • ...
  • That's correct...
  • ...
  • No, not that I know of.
  • ...
  • Sir, what are you suggesting?
  • ...
  • Are you sure?
  • ...
  • No, I'm not arguing, it's just...
  • ...
  • Affirmative.
  • Over and out.

Second interaction:[2]

  • Please stand clear of this machine while we're operating.
  • In fact, I'mma need you to stand clear of the whole arcade.
  • It's best you don't question it, alright?

Third interaction:[2]

  • Sir, it's me again.
  • We have a problem.
  • ...
  • Yeah.
  • There's a kid jeopardizing the operation.
  • Brown hat. Yellow bandana.
  • ...
  • Yep, that's the one.
  • ...
  • Do I have a distraction?
  • No, why would I?
  • What do kids like?
  • ...
  • Video games!?
  • You do know what I'm trying to get them away from right?
  • Their parents?
  • Yeah, I think kids like their parents...
  • ...
  • What?
  • But sir!
  • ...
  • ...Affirmative.
  • Over and out.

Fourth interaction:[2]

  • Say, sport!
  • How have you been lately?
  • How's the homework coming?
  • How're the grades? (Answers: "Great!", " : ( ")

If answer is "Great!"[7]

  • What swell news!
  • Your mother always said your head was too large for your body but you know what?
  • It's because you're so smart!
  • Ha ha! Proud of you!
  • (I'm so sorry.)

If answer is " : ( "[2]

  • Ah, well, you always were a disappointment!
  • ...Is what those nasty bullies at school would say!
  • Ha ha! I would never!
  • Uhh- just keep studying and I'm sure you'll be on the path to success in no time!
  • (I'm so sorry.)

Fifth interaction:[2]

  • (Not again!)
  • Um, hey kiddo!
  • Why don't you go to the playground?
  • Yeah!
  • Go on and get some exercise!
  • These arcade games will only...
  • Will only...
  • ...
  • I've got a job to do.

All later interactions:[2]

  • I've got a job to do.

According to the book "Mysteries of the Underground" that can be found in a hidden room in the Steamworks, the chapter "Blunko's Blunder" describes the same broken arcade machine as having contents that were "unpleasant". Given the mysterious and unpleasant nature of the machine, this seems to be a reference to the real life urban legend of Polybius.

Flowey fight dialogue[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is above 70, Flowey's dialogue at the end of the Neutral Route fight changes. All of these changes only apply on the fourth fight and above.[2]

  • ...
  • Come on!
  • ...
  • ......
  • . . . . . .
  • ...
  • You know? It's strange.
  • Something's off here.
  • We're alone in my mind right
    now.
  • It's clear that we're alone,
    right?
  • Then why I can't shake it...
  • In the moments like this where all
is quiet... that's when I feel
    it.
  • Only since you showed up has
    it been this way.
  • ...
  • I have to reset again.
  • I have to reset until I find
    the right path.
  • Until you make the right
    choices.
  • Until it...
