Fun Value is a random variable in Undertale Yellow which is initialized to a value between 0 and 80[1] when resetting a SAVE file and determines which rare events may happen in the game, similarly to Undertale.

Events[edit | edit source]

Compared to Undertale, Undertale Yellow has more fun events and no additional rolls for whether a fun event occurs or not, making the overall chance of finding a fun event on a regular gameplay much higher. However, unlike Undertale, Undertale Yellow does not enable all fun events in its debug mode.

Swig's name[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is set to 1 (chance of occurring: 1.23%), the game changes Swig's name to "Dave."[2] This affects three occasions: Rephil calling Swig and Toast to come during their introduction in front of the Honeydew Resort, Rephil's letter to Clover after they reach the Oasis Valley, and Toast's dialogue when backtracking to Snowdin after getting the ability to Fast Travel.

This was the first Fun Value made for the game.[3]

Chair Man[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 2 and 10 (chance of occurring: 11.11%),[4] a man sitting on a chair[5] appears on the Wild East Saloon's stage before Starlo's second mission.

When the Fun Value is between 9 and 18 (chance of occurring: 12.35%), the same man appears at Honeydew Resort's stage.[6] Once Clover exits the room they are in, the Chair Man no longer appears. It is possible to see the Chair Man in both Wild East and Honeydew Resort when the Fun Value is set to 9 or 10 (chance of occurring: 2.47%). Together, these two events make the most commonly occuring Fun Value event in the game, with 20.99% chance for a player to see the Chair Man at least once during their gameplay.

Annoying Dog[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 11 and 15 (chance of occurring: 6.17%), the Box Conveyor Puzzle in the Steamworks spits out an Annoying Dog after 7 items.[7] The dog jumps out of the machine, onto the floor below the conveyor belt, then runs away.

Security Station[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 16 and 19 (chance of occurring: 4.94%),[8] the security station in Steamworks (which Clover ends up in when Axis catches them during his chase in the Neutral or Pacifist Route) displays a face grinning on the display. The face resembles ICE-E from Undertale and Deltarune. When interacting with the TV, the face appears to scream, and the TV turns off. This occurrence may be a nod to the iconic jumpscares from the Five Nights at Freddy's series, or a reference to a recurring joke in Deltarune, where Noelle has a childhood fear of the ICE-E's P"e"zza mascot.

Pillar Room[edit | edit source]

All four of the Fun Value pillar drawings (impossible to obtain in-game).

When the Fun Value is between 20 and 29, the designs on the four pillars in the Pillar Room may change depending on its value. For each of these events, the chance of occurring is 3.7%, however, the first three events may occur at the same time (when the value is 22, with a chance of 1.23%).

  • Between values 20 and 22, the first pillar has a drawing of Dalv and shows "A familiar figure." when interacted with.[9]
  • Between values 21 and 23, the second pillar shows a character similar to Axis and the text "An unknown entity." when interacted with.[10]
  • Between values 24 and 26, the third pillar, rather than displaying the caterpillar, depicts a humanoid figure in a skirt. The pillar is broken at where their face should be. This presumably depicts the murder of the blue soul by Axis. The human appears to be wearing the Old Tutu. When interacted with, the text reads "..."[11]
  • Between values 27 and 29, the fourth pillar displays a drawing of a SOUL on it and shows "Somebody's... SOUL?" when interacted with.[12]

These four drawings appear to depict the Snowdin Attack and the events that followed: Dalv running after being attacked, Axis sent after the Integrity human, the Integrity human having been attacked by Axis, and finally the human's obtained SOUL.

Jane Doe and Wanda[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 30 and 39,[13] Clover gets transported to a secret area after returning from the area where Ice Pellets are found in the Snowdin forest. Chance of occurring for both of these events is 6.17%, making them together one of the most commonly occurring events in the game, surpassed only by the Flowey fight dialogue (which has additional requirements to it) and the Chair Man.

  • If the Fun Value is between 30 and 34, Clover encounters a deer-like monster named Jane (full name is Jane Doe in the game files).[14] They claim to be searching for a resident who went missing and trying to figure out how the forest is developing impossible geography, as they don't believe it is a doing of magic.[15]
    • This is actually referenced in the book "Mysteries of the Underground" as well. Inside the book, a short story titled, "The Path" is shared about a Monster only referred to as "____" going missing after going for a fishing trip in Snowdin with their father and wandering off the path into the forest.
  • If the Fun Value is between 35 and 39, Clover encounters a unicorn-like monster named Wanda. She appears to have wandered into the woods due to her (supposedly online) boyfriend named Mikey not paying attention to her.[16]

Duck[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 40 and 45 (chance of occurring: 7.41%), a duck appears during Clover's boat travel between Snowdin and Hotland.[17]

Gerson[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 51 and 55 (chance of occurring: 6.17%), a door appears in North Mines,[18] in the second room after the fall into Dunes. The door leads to a room with Gerson from Undertale. If the Genocide Route has been completed in Snowdin, the door appears, but Gerson does not.

Gerson has the following dialogue:[19]

Interaction #1
  • Say, another explorer in this neck of the caves?
  • Pleased to meet ya!
  • You wouldn't be in the stone-moving business, would you?
  • Ha! Only kidding around!
  • This morning, I set out on an expedition to find new wares for my shop.
  • Right as I passed through that door there, it caved in!
  • Close one, huh?
  • Sorry universe, but you won't do me in that easily!
  • Wa ha ha!
Interaction #2
  • What's a young'n like you doing out here anyway?
  • Surely it wasn't to meet ol' Gerson, was it?
  • To hear one of my famous stories?
  • Surely not!
Selecting "Stories?"
  • Yes! I have many great stories of the old days,
  • Though, at this point, they're more like legends!
  • You see, I used to be a hero. The Hammer of Justice!
  • I'd go round, day and night, walloping any bad guys that needed walloping.
  • This one time, I-
  • I... er...
  • I just forgot all of my stories.
  • Wa ha ha!!
Selecting "I should go"
  • Hey I would too if I could, wa ha ha!
  • If my memory serves, and it usually doesn't, Mining Co. is stationed around here.
  • They could clear this cave in a jiff!
  • Eh, well... the geology here IS interesting.
  • Maybe I'll stay a while, ya know?
  • Take my situation as a blessing in disguise!
Interaction #3
  • If you're ever in Waterfall, be sure to stop by my shop!
  • Got plenty o'wares to sell ya!
  • No better place your allowance could go!
Interaction #4
  • Oh, do you want me to say my catchphrase as a farewell?
  • Alright then! Ready?
  • Let justice prevail!!!
  • ...
  • Or was it "Let justice be done"?
  • Could've also been "Here comes the hammer."
  • ...
  • What can I say? I never could decide on my catchphrase!
  • Wa ha ha!
Interaction #5
  • Be careful out there, kid!

Chujin stare[edit | edit source]

When returning to the Ketsukane Mansion's basement on a Pacifist Route after separating from Martlet, with the Fun Value between 60 and 62 (chance of occurring: 3.7%),[20] the static turns into a video of Chujin before turning back to static. In version v1.0 of the game's full release, this fun event could happen when visiting with Martlet for the first time, but was patched in v1.1.[21]

Everyman Wanted Poster[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 63 and 64 (chance of occurring: 2.47%), an additional Wanted sign displays on the Wild East news board.[22] By opening the image in an image editor and heavily increasing the contrast, the poster is revealed to contain a simple line drawing of the Everyman from Undertale and Deltarune.

Game Machine[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is between 65 and 69 (chance of occurring: 6.17%),[23] a character named "Mr. Sir"[24] appears behind the broken game machine in Café Dune. The character is colored in shades of gray and speaks to an unknown entity on the phone. When Clover interacts with them, they claim Clover is jeopardizing the operation and tries to distract them by asking them about school.

The book "Mysteries of the Underground" that can be found in a hidden room in the Steamworks talks about the arcade machine as having been created by Blunko Industries and Team Y, two human companies behind the Mew Mew Love Blaster!, and then retrieved from the Waterfall garbage dump by monsters. Few monsters recall it working, and the legends say that that its contents were "unpleasant" upon experience.[25]

This NPC has been pitched by AeroArtwork. He is a play on men in black, whereas the arcade machine is a joke about the Polybius.[26]

Upon interaction, Mr. Sir shows the following dialogue:[27]

Interaction #1
  • Yep...
  • ...
  • That's correct...
  • ...
  • No, not that I know of.
  • ...
  • Sir, what are you suggesting?
  • ...
  • Are you sure?
  • ...
  • No, I'm not arguing, it's just...
  • ...
  • Affirmative.
  • Over and out.
Interaction #2
  • Please stand clear of this machine while we're operating.
  • In fact, I'mma need you to stand clear of the whole arcade.
  • It's best you don't question it, alright?
Interaction #3
  • Sir, it's me again.
  • We have a problem.
  • ...
  • Yeah.
  • There's a kid jeopardizing the operation.
  • Brown hat. Yellow bandana.
  • ...
  • Yep, that's the one.
  • ...
  • Do I have a distraction?
  • No, why would I?
  • What do kids like?
  • ...
  • Video games!?
  • You do know what I'm trying to get them away from right?
  • Their parents?
  • Yeah, I think kids like their parents...
  • ...
  • What?
  • But sir!
  • ...
  • ...Affirmative.
  • Over and out.
Interaction #4
  • Say, sport!
  • How have you been lately?
  • How's the homework coming?
  • How're the grades?
Selecting "Great!"
  • What swell news!
  • Your mother always said your head was too large for your body but you know what?
  • It's because you're so smart!
  • Ha ha! Proud of you!
  • (I'm so sorry.)
Selecting ":("
  • Ah, well, you always were a disappointment!
  • ...Is what those nasty bullies at school would say!
  • Ha ha! I would never!
  • Uhh- just keep studying and I'm sure you'll be on the path to success in no time!
  • (I'm so sorry.)
Interaction #5
  • (Not again!)
  • Um, hey kiddo!
  • Why don't you go to the playground?
  • Yeah!
  • Go on and get some exercise!
  • These arcade games will only...
  • Will only...
  • ...
  • I've got a job to do.
Interaction #6
  • I've got a job to do.

Flowey fight dialogue[edit | edit source]

When the Fun Value is above 70 (chance of occurring: 13.58%),[28] and Clover has fought him at least three times before (the changes happen on the fourth fight and above), Flowey's dialogue at the end of his Neutral Route fight changes. He expresses doubt that Clover and him are alone in his mind. This might imply that Flowey might be feeling the player's presence. This event is the second most common fun event, albeit its prerequisite makes it appear much rarely on a regular gameplay.

Flowey says the following dialogue:[29][30]

  • Hey.
  • Hey!
  • Come on!
  • ...
  • ......
  • . . . . . .
  • (Flowey switches to his normal form)
  • ...
  • You know? It's strange.
  • Something's off here.
  • We're alone in my mind right now.
  • It's clear that we're alone, right?
  • Then why I can't shake it...
  • In the moments like this where all is quiet... that's when I feel it.
  • Only since you showed up has it been this way.
  • ...
  • I have to reset again.
  • I have to reset until I find the right path.
  • Until you make the right choices.
  • Until it...
  • (The game cuts to the Neutral Route ending credits)
