Rodney's Band is a band playing at the Honeydew Resort in Snowdin when Clover first arrives, and throughout the Underground. Its members, Rodney, NoteBlock and Soundtrack represent the three composers on Undertale Yellow that have been composing tracks since the demo, Master Sword, NoteBlock and MyNewSoundtrack. They were designed by TeleviQ.[1]

Profile[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

The band's appearance is based on avatars of the respective composers. Master Sword's avatar used to be the Triforce holding the Master Sword, usually depicted purple, and therefore Rodney was designed as a purple monster with a triangular head and shades. NoteBlock's avatar is a white square wearing headphones with a musical note on it, and his appearance in the game depicts his head similarly, with a monitor showing a music visualizer on it. MyNewSoundtrack's avatar is a green Koopa, and so his appearance in-game is a green monster with a shell on his head.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Their personalities are supposedly matching their behavior in real life.[citation needed]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Rodney's name comes from Master Sword's middle name (Josiah Rodney Smith). NoteBlock's and Soundtrack's name come from respective usernames of these composers, NoteBlock and MyNewSoundtrack.

Main Story[edit | edit source]

On all routes, the trio appears at Honeydew Resort initially playing Honeydew Cabin. Rodney plays the keyboard, NoteBlock plays the drums and Soundtrack plays a cello. When interacting with Rodney, he introduces the band and allows Clover to change the music. With an initially 19 chance (lowering to 18, then 17 etc. every next interaction) he plays Honeydew Bark. Otherwise, it plays one of Honeydew Ruins, Honeydew Snow or Honeydew Hideaway, and goes back to playing Honeydew Cabin once they finish.

Near the stage, there is the Superfan NPC who talks about how they followed the band between places and learned all their aliases. They got the Band Merch Pin from one of their concerts they held at the Garbage Dump, and they give it to Clover once Honeydew Bark is playing.

Neutral/Pacifist Route[edit | edit source]

Box figure of Rodney from the Steamworks Factory.

When interacting with NoteBlock in Honeydew Resort, he talks about how he doesn't understand music theory, which is why he plays the drums. When interacting with Soundtrack, he asks Clover whether they prefer major or minor scales, and that he's one of the rare minor scale fans.

In the Steamworks Factory on a Pacifist Route, a box figure of Rodney appears as on of the trash items in the first packaging minigame.[2]

The band appears in UG Apartments for the second time, this time playing UG Apartments. Rodney says how their instruments sound different due to the sound system. NoteBlock and Soundtrack can't be interacted with.

In the True Pacifist Ending credits, they can be seen in Snowdin bying items from Mo, if Clover bought at least 4 items from him.

Genocide Route[edit | edit source]

Before exhausting the kill count, the band plays regularly but their tracks are slowed down 50%, just like all other tracks. NoteBlock only has one line of dialogue. Soundtrack has additional lines about how major scales don't fit the mood anymore, and how the bittersweet tunes in minor scales feel especially relevant.

After exhausting the kill count, the band is still in the cabin, although not playing any music and in a clearly somber mood. Rodney says they thought their music was bad, but others said that there was danger. He expresses concern about an incident from the past repeating, possibly alluding to the Snowdin attack. NoteBlock says how Rodney insisted they stay.

The band does not appear in UG Apartments.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • After Undertale Yellow's release, Master Sword announced that a similarly looking character (most likely due to being based on his previous avatar) became his mascot. He only feeds him Ritz Crackers and small rocks.[3]
