Zenith Martlet
- For her battle in Snowdin, see Martlet/In Battle.
Zenith Martlet is the final boss of the Genocide Route. Having injected herself with determination to stop Clover's rampage, Martlet powers up into a new and far stronger form.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Profile[edit | edit source]
Martlet's hair grows much longer in this form, being longer than her entire body. Her hair is bright blue and her facial feathers are a dark blue. The bottom of her pants are torn and her boots tear off to reveal large, sharp three-toed talons. She has bright yellow eyes. In Phase 1, she wears a chestplate with a heart in the direction of a human SOUL, and she has large wings with a detailed galaxy pattern inside them. In Phase 2, she loses her chestplate and the star pattern on her wings, which change to resemble fists. The battle box and buttons are blue during this fight. She has a starry grid battle background; in Phase 2, cracks shoot out from the grid behind her as her HP lowers.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The name "Zenith Martlet" was taken from her encounter flavor text, "The Zenith of Monsterkind." During development, she was referred to as "Moral Martlet" or "Martlet the Moral,"[1] but both developers and fans refer to her more as Zenith Martlet.
Main Story[edit | edit source]
Seeing Chujin Ketsukane's paranoia about humans, Martlet snuck into the True Lab to find something that could protect against a violent human. Inside, she stole a single syringe of determination. Martlet hangs onto it until the time Clover enters the Underground.
If Martlet believes that Clover can change their ways, as on a Neutral Route, she tosses away the serum on the roof of UG Apartments. However, on a Genocide Route, she knows that they will not stop their rampage and injects herself with the determination. This causes her to transform herself to be far stronger and stop Clover. She is protected from their attacks by her chestplate. Once it is damaged enough, she is knocked down and Clover destroy it, which shows them a flashback of her conversation with Chujin and her stealing the determination. After, Martlet gets up and attacks them again. Over the course of this phase, she slowly melts until she cannot fight anymore, eventually turning to dust. This fight heavily damages the rooftop around them.
Attacks[edit | edit source]
Phase 1[edit | edit source]
Martlet will take the first turn in the fight, similarly to Ceroba. Her first four attacks are scripted and will play out in the following order:
- Opener: Yellow feathers will fall from the top of the screen and dash towards the SOUL if not shot, exploding into 4 projectiles. Walls of white feathers will then cover the two halves of the screen in two different patterns. After this, rows of red and yellow blocks will descend from the top of the Bullet Board, with the yellow ones being destructible, before a row of white ones appears that must be dashed through.
- Feather Split: White feathers will be aimed at preset locations or at the SOUL and will spray either a dense cone of feathers targeted at the SOUL or a circular spread of them.
- Talons: Talons will hover beside the SOUL and slash at it after a varying delay.
- Wing Shot: Seven yellow wings will appear at the top of the bullet board and fire six feathers towards the bottom, then descend. The wings can be retracted using two normal shots or a charged shot.
After these attacks, Martlet will use the following attacks in a random order. She will not reuse an attack until the others have been used.
- Wings + Feathers: Two yellow wings will shoot and fall towards the player, followed by two targeted feather cones. This is followed by another wing and three more rapid feather cones.
- Feather Circle II: Two rings of five yellow feathers each will circle the Bullet Board. After a short delay, each individual feather will charge at the SOUL, shooting a targeted cone of feathers on impact. Each feather requires three hits to break.
- Talon Blast: The bullet board will shrink to a smaller size before various targeted cones and circular sprays of feathers appear. The attack ends with two talons attacking the SOUL, with the order being left then right.
- Talon Wings: Talons will continuously attack the SOUL, along with a variant of the yellow wings that does not shoot smaller feathers.
- Blocks: Rows of red, yellow, and white blocks will descend down the Bullet Board. After seven rows, vertical columns of white blocks will be sent from the left side, then the right. Failure to dash through these blocks in time will deal damage.
- Talon Scrape: A large talon will descend and create three permanent white attacks, splitting the board in four. Feathers will then attack the center of each section before three talons swipe at the SOUL. Finally, feathers will attack horizontally at the same time as another talon slashing at the SOUL.
The following attack has a small chance to replace one of the above attacks:
- Tornado II: Random items start falling from the top of the Bullet board extremely quickly, with a higher chance to be a bowling ball or wooden plank. The wind effect from earlier versions is stronger and cuts off dashes.
Martlet also has three preset attacks when her armor reaches certain amounts of HP:
- 50% HP*: Five targeted cones of feathers will be shot at the player, followed by a large amount of white feathers dashing towards the center and telegraphed by a line. A wall of feathers will descend from the top of the screen during this section. Three talons will appear and slash at the SOUL, with the third having a longer delay. The bullet board will then expand to cover the screen and Martlet will glide from the top-left corner and charge downwards.
- 30% HP: Rows of blocks will appear, similarly to her "Blocks" attack. Some rows may be doubled up and require a longer dash. No columns of blocks are present in this attack. This attack is skippable if Martlet's armor HP is depleted too quickly.
- 25% HP*: Rings of five feathers will spiral into the center of the Bullet Board and exit. Four yellow feathers similar to those in the opener will dash at the SOUL, followed by three talons. Walls of feathers will appear from the top, left, and right sides of the board in that order, followed by a fourth talon swipe. Martlet will them charge at the screen similarly to her 50% HP attack.
*Martlet is absent for the majority of this attack and cannot be shot.
After fully depleting Martlet's armor HP and shooting it off, a cutscene will play and Phase 2 will start.
Phase 2[edit | edit source]
Martlet will take the first turn again.
- Opener: The attack introduces directional blocks, which rotate the SOUL's shooting direction and cannot be dashed through. 9 clusters of assorted blocks will fall from the top, and the SOUL will be rotated to the left. After 4 clusters coming in from the left, the SOUL will be rotated to the right and 2 more rows will spawn.
Martlet will use the following attacks when her HP drops below certain percentage values:
- 80% HP: A large number of blocks will appear from the top of the Bullet Board, followed by the left side.
- 60% HP: Five large stars will appear from all sides of the Bullet Board except the bottom, and directional blocks are placed to aim at them. Large stars split into two medium stars when broken, which then each split into three small stars that fly at the SOUL. Large, medium, and small stars have 3, 2, and 1 health respectively, and all star types except small can hit the SOUL even during a dash.
- 40% HP: A cluster of blocks will fall from the top, followed by white block walls from the left, top, and right sides in that order. The player will then be presented with left and right directional blocks, of which right is the correct option to shoot the incoming blocks. After a cluster of blocks from the right, the player is presented with up and left blocks, of which left is correct.
- 20% HP: Many complete and incomplete rows of blocks will fall from the top, followed by a single star along with right directional blocks pointing the SOUL away from it. Columns of blocks will then appear from the left and right sides simultaneously.
Otherwise, Martlet will use the following attacks in a random order:
- Meteor Shower: Four meteors will fall onto the Bullet Board, splitting into two smaller meteors when shot once. Any meteor that touches the bottom of the Bullet Board will flash the screen white and deal damage. This attack is always used on turn 2.
- Talon Blast II: Talons and targeted feather sprays will attack the SOUL, ending in two feather sprays from both sides of the Bullet Board.
- Meteors + Feathers: Martlet will alternate between shooting three targeted feather sprays and a meteor at the SOUL.
- Feather Spiral II: Rings of three feathers identical to the ones in her Genocide Snowdin battle will appear, along with four talons with varying intervals. The attack ends with two targeted feather cones from the top and bottom.
Strategy[edit | edit source]
General[edit | edit source]
This is by far the hardest fight in Undertale Yellow. It's recommended to prepare and obtain as many items as possible.
- For your Accessory, it is recommended to obtain the Golden Bandana as it has the highest defense in the game and makes the fight a lot more manageable. If you had not been collecting the golden items, the Delta Rune Patch will suffice.
- For your Ammo, Silver Ammo deals the most amount of damage only if you hit all your shots perfectly. If you don't feel confident in your shooting, you can alternatively use Friendliness Pellets.
- Gunpowder is your best healing item as it will heal you to Max HP. You can only find one at Blackjacks, so it's best to use it wisely.
- Floral Cupcakes are your second best healing items, as they heal 50 HP. One can be found at the Café Dune (though you may have already used yours when fighting Ceroba) and two can be found at Bits & Bites.
- If you had not already used it in the Ceroba fight, the Cinnamon Cookie can also be used as it heals 35 HP, slightly more than most healing items available.
- If you have the Golden Cactus and did not get the Bandana, you can abuse a bug where you can constantly heal throughout the entire fight.[2]
- The rest of your items will mainly consist of healing items that heal 30HP, such as Cinnamon-Butterscotch Stradel, Feisty Slider and Gravity Granola.
In order to maximize the potential of the Gunpowder,
- If you have the Delta Rune Patch, use any 30HP healing item as your first. Make sure you're not healing up to max HP.
- If you have the Golden Bandana, use the Cinnamon Cookie for 35 HP as your first.
Both of these options will set your HP to 1 more than a multiple of 11 or 9 respectively, allowing you to potentially use the Gunpowder at 1 HP and heal up to max.
Phase 1[edit | edit source]
During the first phase of her final battle, Martlet's chest armor must be destroyed through the SOUL blaster, as the FIGHT option is unavailable. Clover also gains the ability to dash using their SOUL, which can be useful in avoiding most of the attacks that Martlet throws at you.
Intermission[edit | edit source]
After her chest piece's health is depleted, she falls to the ground before the screen fades to white and the chest piece can be heard shattering. A flashback then ensues, showing her telling Chujin about how she got a job as a Royal Guard, posted near Hotland. Shortly after, it cuts to a conversation between Alphys and Martlet, before another cut to Martlet standing infront of the true lab door. It fades to black as she enters the true lab, muttering "Humans are dangerous..." as the flashback ends.
Phase 2[edit | edit source]
In the second phase, Clover can FIGHT and use the SOUL blaster to damage Martlet, though she must be finished off through the FIGHT option as the SOUL blaster can't kill her. During this phase, two ACTs will be added to the menu: Focus and Endure, with Endure recovering some of Clover's HP.
As her health depletes, her body's integrity begins to waver. When Martlet loses all of her health, she asks Clover how many it'd take for them to be satisfied, calling them an unjust maniac. She attempts to say something else, beginning with "I hope you-" but is cut short when she starts losing color and melts rapidly. She desperately pleads for help, to no avail, and eventually fully disintegrates, levelling Clover up to LV 20.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Martlet’s final battle Game Over quote is the only one in the game that doesn’t have Flowey's type sound. It is also being the only battle where only one quote appears: “Again.”
- While some have speculated this means Clover could SAVE at this point, the developers confirmed they only gain this ability after reaching LV 20.[4]
- Martlet's Remind and Focus ACTs are meant to have a second line of text. Because the game does not allow for multiple textboxes for one ACT, however, these lines go unused.
