Unused Text
Undertale Yellow contains many lines of unused text that never appear for various reasons. This article aims to highlight some of them.
Unused Cutscene Dialogue[edit | edit source]
There is an unused Martlet line from the room before the Wild East. There is nothing in the code to create it.
- It's awfully quiet... let's be cautious.
Ceroba Jandroid dialogue[edit | edit source]
Ceroba is meant to have more dialogue reacting to the first Jandroid she and Clover encounter after the battle finishes. Due to an error in a variable being set, this never goes used.
- Ceroba, after the Jandroid is spared:
- They're gone.
- Sigh... This is so confusing...
- I thought Axis said he was the last of his kind?
- Wait... he introduced himself as "Model 014".
- There must have been 13 other guard-bot prototypes.
- Guess we're lucky only one functions, huh.
- Still, this thing definitely wasn't a guard-bot...
- We don't know how many other robot types are out there.
- We'll figure it out in due time, I'm sure.
- Just... be extremely careful.
- Ceroba, after the Jandroid is killed:
- What are you thinking?!
- I know they started the fight but we don't know the situation!
- What if it was a glitch in their programming?
- ...
- These bots are antiques.
- We have no right to destroy them, got that?
- ...Sigh.
- Why are we in this situation to begin with?
- I thought Axis said he was the last of his kind...
- Wait...
- He introduced himself as "Model 014".
- There must have been 13 other guard-bot prototypes.
- I suppose only one is still functioning.
- Still, this thing definitely wasn't a guard-bot...
- We don't know how many other robot types are out there.
- We'll figure it out in due time, I'm sure.
- Just... don't do anything stupid.
Other Steamworks[edit | edit source]
An unused Ceroba interaction for entering the Macro Froggit room.
- Used cutscene:
- Where'd you go?
- It's like I blinked and lost you.
- Well, uh, don't do that again.
- Unused cutscene:
- I'll wait outside.
Flowey's Friendliness Pellets cutscene on the Neutral Route- before the Furnace- has an unused variant for if Clover already picked up the Pellets. Since Clover would have to finish Dunes on Genocide to do get the Pellets before this, and Genocide is not set to Neutral in the Steamworks until after defeating Axis without the kill count completed, this line never appears.
- Howdy!
- Looks like things are heating up!
- Literally, that is.
- Since you shut the bots down, it should be an easy stroll to the exit.
- Good luck, Clover.
A similar thing happens with the Chemistry Lab cutscene - its Genocide variant has an alternate dialogue path for if the game is set to Neutral, which it can't be.
- [Axis]
- ThIS D_OR iS SEALED SO.. .
- LeAVE US Al0NE, PLeASE.
- I KN0W W_WHY YOU ARE heRE.
- TRY ALL yOU LIKE BUT tHE STEAMWORKS... .
- ALL oF US.
- WE ARe SURVIV0RS.
- [Flowey]
- He's gone.
- So what's the plan now?
- This door's beyond my abilities so don't look at me.
- Already checked it.
- The factory wing, right?
- Yeah. Place has more locks than a hair salon.
- Okay let's see...
- Well, there's certainly a lot of junk lying around.
- I know you're on a strict "shoot don't think" regiment but...
- For once, you're gonna have to get creative.
- Shocking. Distressing, even. I know.
- But I've seen you work your brain before so...
- Get to it!
There is unused Ceroba dialogue during the Pacifist Axis battle. Given the number in its name, obj_steamworks_35_in_battle_
, it was presumably meant to be placed in-between cutscene 2 (Ceroba entering the Furnace) and cutscene 4 (Ceroba showing Axis Daisy).
- What now? His SOUL gauge is pulsing...
- You have any ideas?
The argument in the True Pacifist Ending continues on for a couple more lines after the whiteout.
- [Martlet] You know I really thought tonight's fiasco was enough!
- [Martlet] We all talked it through and things were going well.
- [Martlet] But you immediately suggest giving the future children up to
- [Ceroba] I didn't mean it like that! Get off my case!
- [Martlet] I'm sorry but I don't think you exactly have room to talk right now.
- [Starlo] Come on you two! Cut it out!
Unused Environment Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Snowdin Genocide[edit | edit source]
Several lines in Snowdin on the Genocide Route do not appear, using their Neutral/Pacifist variants instead.
Shack remnants, used:
- (Some wood; presumably taken off of the dilapidated shack.)
- (You notice a blue feather hidden behind it.)
Shack remnants, unused Genocide:
- (Remains of the tattered shack.)
Old tree, used:
- (An old and fragile tree.)
Old tree, unused Genocide:
- (It's a tree. Nothing special.)
Martlet station, used:
- (There's a notebook on the counter, titled, 'My Puzzle Blueprints'.)
- (This must be where Martlet sketches her puzzle ideas.)
Martlet station, unused Genocide:
- (An abandoned kiosk with snow slowly gathering inside.)
- (You watch as the bitter, whistling breeze rustles the notebook lying on the counter.)
Wild East[edit | edit source]
The clinic's window has different flavor text as Clover progresses through the Wild East. The final one does not appear.
- (You peer through the window...)
- (You see several monsters on their way to full health.)
There is a full unused interaction for the poker table in the Saloon. Nothing creates it, so it gets unused.
Normal:
- (A table for three with a few empty glasses.)
- (A few G's from a past tip catch your eye.)
- (Take it?)
- "Yes"
- (You got 10G! Happy?)
- "No"
- (It doesn't belong to you anyway.)
Genocide:
- (An abandoned table.)
Steamworks[edit | edit source]
An unused Neutral and Genocide interaction for the Factory entrance.
- (The door is locked.) (Neutral)
- (Locked.) (Genocide)
Interacting with the Chemistry Lab roboceptionist corpse on the Genocide Route.
- (A familiar display.)
There is text for melting through the Chemistry Lab door with the Hydrochloric Acid. In-game, the cutscene simply shows it melting instead of stating it.
- (The door melted away.)
The robot control station only uses its Neutral/Pacifist dialogue, though it has Genocide text implying Axis used it. This is unused because it is overridden by the dialogue for when the bridge flag is set to extended.[1]
Used, normal:
- (You hear the whirring of cooling fans inside the hot console.)
- (Best leave it be.)
Unused, Genocide:
- (The computer was recently used.)
Unused NPC text[edit | edit source]
Snowdin[edit | edit source]
At the Snowdin - Delta Rock SAVE on the Genocide Route, Flowey just repeats his first dialogue. The second section is unused.
- Used first interaction
- You been thinking over what I said?
- Due respect to your decision making process...
- But would you mind hurrying it up?
- It's cold out here and I don't fancy freezing.
- Unused second interaction
- Let's move it, kid.
- There'll be more time to think later.
Dunes[edit | edit source]
The Red Miner has this text assigned to them.
- ...
- ...
- ...
- Bruh...
Red has dialogue, when talking to her with Martlet for the first time, that gets overwritten.
- [Red] You STILL think I'm... your captain DID explain to you I'm not a human, right?
- [Red] Please tell me she did.
- [Martlet] Oh! I'm so sorry! I just thought you-
- [Red] No, no, I'm sorry, I just... get it often.
- [Red] You MAY OR MAY NOT be the first that apprehended me repeatedly, though.
- [Red] Kinda put me on edge.
- [Martlet] It's totally fine!
When talking to Ceroba while she is in the Feisty Five's house by the movie tapes in the Wild East, one of her interactions is broken, beginning with the first line from the next interaction instead of the correct line.
- Interaction 3, intended dialogue:
- Get out of my hair before you die of melodrama, will you?
- I'm fine, trust me.
- You need to focus on passing your training.
- Interaction 3, bugged dialogue:
- You should get going. You don't wanna miss your next mission.
- I'm fine, trust me.
- You need to focus on passing your training.
- Interaction 4:
- You should get going. You don't wanna miss your next mission.
Wild East, Starlo killed[edit | edit source]
The same NPCs that appear if Starlo was spared have alternate dialogue for if he was killed. However, if he was killed, the only NPC that appears is Mooch, so this dialogue is never shown.
- Gamer, interaction 1
- Yo, exciting news.
- I just built myself a new computer and guess what?
- You can play GAMES on it!
- Isn't that awesome???
- Why don't you look excited?
- ...Alright then, sorry I brought it up.
- Gamer, interaction 2
- Forget about the game stuff.
- I'm more of a single-player type anyway.
- Cowcat, interaction 1
- Howdy, Deputy.
- I'm real worried! Worried sick!
- No one can find the Sheriff! Nyo one at all!
- He's gonna return soon, right? He's gotta!
- Cowcat, interaction 2
- Nyohoho.
- Happy Cactus, interaction 1
- Why if it isn't the Deputy!
- Do you think the Feisty Five will ever get back together!
- I hope-hope-hope they do!
- It isn't any fun being apart, no ho!
- Happy Cactus, interaction 2
- You're Star's right-hand man, correct?
- If you see him, tell him we all miss his leadership!
- That we do!
Unused Ceroba TALK Lines[edit | edit source]
In the room after escaping the basement, immediately after meeting Axis, Ceroba's TALK dialogue is bugged, leading to two lines being unused. This is due to a "Break" being placed in the wrong spot, resulting in code from the next room being pulled.
- Intended dialogue (Talk 1):
- So Axis is completely artificial intelligence?
- Well... artificial at least.
- Still, unemotional as he may be...
- The fact he so closely resembles life is impressive.
- Bugged dialogue (Talk 1):
- Keep a move on, Clover.
- Well... artificial at least.
- Still, unemotional as he may be...
- The fact he so closely resembles life is impressive.
- Intended dialogue (Talk 2):
- Standing around won't get us to Hotland.
- Come on.
- Bugged dialogue (Talk 2):
- Keep a move on, Clover.
- Come on.
Ceroba's second talk line on the first Factory floor has an unused line from Clover.
- [Clover] Starlo?
- !
- You're...
- You're serious?
- Well...
- Perhaps at one point in my life I considered it.
- You know, back when I was a naive kid, kinda like you.
- [Clover] Ah. (unused)
- Hey, it's science. Your brain is still developing.
Ceroba also has TALK dialogue for the Furnace before encountering Axis. Since she is shut off from Clover as soon as they enter, and the dialogue changes after defeating Axis, this is unable to be seen.
- Talk 1:
- Was the only purpose of this furnace to dispose of garbage?
- Why would they make it mandatory to walk through?
- If you entered from Hotland...
- ...the first thing you would smell is burning trash.
- "Welcome to the Steamworks! It sucks here!"
- Talk 2:
- This is way too hot, even for me.
- Let's leave please.
Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]
When Clover climbs the Dark Ruins rope, there is unused text for Flowey loading.
- File 1 Loaded
There is an unused letter from the Honeydew Resort.
