Chemistry Lab
The Chemistry Lab (also called the Chemistry Wing) is a section of the Steamworks. When operational, it was where various nebulous science activities took place. It is also where the energy plants grown in the Greenhouse were devised. Clover enters it on the Neutral and Genocide Routes, as they cannot enter the Factory without Ceroba accompanying them as she has Chujin's codes to access it.
Features[edit | edit source]
- Sousborg, a robot only able to be encountered once.
- Dihydrogen Monoxide and the Cake.
- A minigame to create the Steamworks ID, on a Neutral Route.
- A minigame to mix the Hydrochloric Acid.
Map[edit | edit source]
Main Story[edit | edit source]
History[edit | edit source]
The Chemistry Lab was home to many experiments. The most notable of these were the energy plants made as an alternative to the generator and taken care of by the Greenhouse. The Chemistry Lab appeared to be under the supervision of a "Science Division."[1]
Neutral Route[edit | edit source]
Flowey appears as Clover enters the reception room and suggests they make a Steamworks ID. After doing so, they can open the door and progress into the laboratory. They encounter Sousborg near the exit of the lab. Clover can move a cabinet in the next room to find the Hermit, who hid away after the robots reactivated. In the compound mixing room, Flowey appears again to suggest breaking through the locked door to the next hall. Clover must mix compounds to create the Hydrochloric Acid to apply on the lock. After dissolving the lock, the door opens to reveal Axis standing immediately behind it. He attempts to use acid he is holding on Clover, but drops it, opening a pit beneath him that he falls through. To open the building exit, Clover has to swipe their Steamworks ID again.
Genocide Route[edit | edit source]
Clover enters the reception room and encounters Axis. He sees them, opens the door, and runs through it; Clover does not make a Steamworks ID. They enter the compound mixing room just as Axis closes the door. He talks to them from behind the door, hinting that he believes he is the cause of their rampage and telling them to give up, before fleeing. Flowey rises to encourage Clover to stop using brute force and complete the puzzle. The computer uses more direct language than its casual speech in the Neutral Route and while the minigame plays the same, it appears to be broken, with the screen flickering and the song switching tempo. When Clover dissolves the lock, the building exit is already open.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The building opens into a reception room. The door forward requires a Steamworks ID to open. After a long hallway is a laboratory with the Steamworks - Laboratory SAVE point. Science equipment and the Cake is left out around the lab. The lab exits onto a short hallway with cabinets. One cabinet has the Dihydrogen Monoxide. The other leads to a hidden room with the Hermit and some of their science experiments. This room contains the book "Mysteries of the Underground." The end of the hallway leads to the compound mixing room. The door to next room is locked by a hefty lock. It contains a computer, seemingly operated by Mr. Screen, and an assortment of various objects Clover can pick up and throw into the computer. As the essay in the trash suggests, they have to throw in hydrogen and chlorine to create Hydrochloric Acid. To mix the compounds, they have to complete a short minigame of maneuvering a moving hydrogen circle to the chlorine goal while preventing it from touching the walls. The next room is a hallway leading around to the building exit, which is right by the Factory exit.
Steamworks ID[edit | edit source]
In the first room of the Chemistry Lab on a Neutral Route, Clover can create the Steamworks ID. The creation is a simple minigame. Clover can pick from eight colors, including the background color to function as an eraser, to draw with. Pressing the crayon changes the crayon's thickness between two settings. The ID starts with pre-existing writing that can be drawn over completely.
When complete, the ID goes into Clover's Mail. They later must use it to open the exit to the Chemistry Lab. If they backtrack to Vendy after this, they register Clover as a valid Steamworks Chemist and is much more cordial to them. All Steamworks employees had IDs and were meant to carry them with them at all times.[2]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- There is a less aggressive variant of the Genocide Route Axis cutscene in the compound mixing room for if Clover aborted the route in the Steamworks beforehand.[3] Since the route is not actually set to be aborted until after the Axis battle, this variant is unused.
- The obscured award in the Steamworks awards hallway is meant to read "Greatness in Chemistry" and is a reference to W. D. Gaster.[4] This suggests that Gaster formerly worked in the Chemistry Lab.
